The Chargers, owned by the grifters known as the Spanos family, wanted the taxpayers of San Diego to give them a new multi-billion dollar stadium in San Diego. The taxpayers in San Diego voted no. The Spanoses are truly dispicable.
There was a lot of bad feeling, as I recall, because the city of San Diego had spent a lot on upgrades and expanding the stadium for the Chargers, and specifically to have enough capacity to meet Super Bowl standards. Against that backdrop, just a few years later, the Chargers started campaigning for a new stadium.
Interesting to talk of the voters voting it down, because in 1998, voters overwhelming approved subsidies to build Petco Park for the Padres.
