Trump says he’d ban government from labeling speech as misinformation

Former President Trump said Thursday that he’d ban the U.S. government from labeling any domestic speech as “misinformation” or “disinformation” if he returns to the White House.

“I will sign an executive order banning any federal department or agency from colluding with any organization, business or person to censor, limit, categorize or impede the lawful speech of American citizens. I will then ban federal money from being used to label domestic speech as mis- or disinformation,” Trump said in a pre-taped video shared with the New York Post.
The former president also said he’d fire federal bureaucrats who he perceived to have engaged in domestic censorship.

“Directly or indirectly, whether they are the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Health and Human Services, the FBI, the DOJ, no matter who they are,” he said of those he’d seek to fire.

Trump further pledged to direct the Department of Justice to “aggressively prosecute” the alleged censorship.

I think part of the reason he did was a legal defense maneuver.

"..I will then ban federal money from being used to label domestic speech as mis- or disinformation..."

Does this include the taxpayer funded Oval Office declaring that something is “fake news?”

Does there need to be a law for the President to ban it in the subsidiaries of the Executive Branch?

“We don’t need the FBI and DNI to stamp it like the AD does our cuts of beef..”

Yep, there ain’t one word in the Constitution that makes the government responsible for what we read, think, believe or decide.

Good question. ‘Fake news’ is an expression of opinion. I don’t think Trump ever asked Twitter to ban or suppress accounts that disagreed with that opinion... that is the ‘nub’ of it..

“The 1st Amendment bans the federal legislature from passing laws limiting freedom of speech... doesn’t really do much about the executive branch...”

Actually, that’s the 1st Amendment as it was written, but there are over 200 years of jurisprudence on the subject and the courts have expanded 1st Amendment protections to restrain the entire federal government, and the state governments as well.

So you’re upset that Trump said he is going to LIMIT government overreach?

He’s not talking about setting up any new “entity” or “authority”, just restricting the Executive branch from doing what they shouldn’t have been doing in the first place, which is already well within the purview of the President, as head of the Executive branch.

From the first tranche of the Twitter Files:

9. Celebrities and unknowns alike could be removed or reviewed at the behest of a political party:

10.Both parties had access to these tools. For instance, in 2020, requests from both the Trump White House and the Biden campaign were received and honored. However:

I still haven’t seen anything that says Trump himself asked Twitter to limit speech... I could be wrong, just want to see the receipts...

But we already know and know well that no diktat from the government is enforceable without a policing entity to so enforce. So yeah, using the government to regulate the government just sets up a condition where low-level bureaucrats self-appoint to police something or other and are thrown under the nearest bus should they take any heat. There is no “Oh gee, the law says this and so I should conduct my activities to conform to the law”. Gov’t is not in the business of limiting its own overreach. It instead seeks to expand it. In this case, it’s misinfo for the gov’t to say it is the final authority on labeling something as misinfo and it concurrently sets whatever authority applying the label as saying “we are the source of truth”. It’s like an anti-tautology.

With proof even government should be able to call a lie a lie. But calling the truth a lie should be punishable.

His proposal is a mix of Executive branch action and Congressional action.

Trump is starting to make some dopey comments. Personally I think he made an error announcing his 2024 candidacy this early.

Not me.

He was right on time!

And given you are calling some of his comments dopey, you probably thought or were saying the same things of President Trump from 2016 onward.

He is still the same Trump.

MAGA 2024 my FRiend!

I’ll go read that speech and get back to you. I watched it and didn’t get the idea he’s setting up anything to do anything.

My takeaway was he is going after those in the Govt that are doing the censorship now!

Oh no, you should go watch that speech again. He isn’t setting anything up like that.... He’s taking a sledge hammer to the machine.

“When I’m president, this whole rotten system of censorship and information control will be ripped out of the system at large. There won’t be anything left,” he said”

I went to MSN to read the story and there was more propaganda in it than content.
