“… creating about 50 percent more pressure inside the capsule than what’s inside the center of the sun...”

A concession of scientific error.
Do you mean John Cocktoasten? He’s a guest of the Underhills.
So why dont they just leave this thing turned on and our power needs for EVs is solved? !
Might have something to do with replicating the sun on earth….since it damaged their equipment.
Using the world’s largest laser, consisting of 192 beams and temperatures more than three times hotter than the center of the sun...

Just another 30 years and we’ll have commercial fusion power. And I forgot to mention, free beer tomorrow.
O good. California has this. The state that was deeply involved in putting Hitler in power. What could go wrong.
If it turns out to be true, even if the total cost is ignored, this is a great step in eliminating all the windmill and solar panel people. That alone is worth the research money.
World’s largest laser, consisting of 192 beams and temperatures more than three times hotter than the center of the sun.
Climate control cult making calls for protest?.
When the first successful fusion reaction is attained they will not know it.
Everybody else will, though............
LMAO!
Chapter five is a good place to start the book, if you decide to read it. Despite its age (published over 15 years ago, research on it going back another four or five) and ignoring the author's partisan hackness, one realizes that the main energy has come from wishful thinking, despite various technical breakthroughs. The purpose to research anything is to learn previously unknown things, and the benefit to essentially limitless energy is to lower costs for everything and effectively boost productivity / jobs / wealth creation.
> Jury is still out.
well, now we have another way to breakeven. If they could get it up to 35 MJ or so it could make fusion pulsed propulsion space drive quite workable. Might need to site the lasers a lot further away and rig some kind of confinement field to keep the plasma going the right way.
I believe the Z-Machine demonstrated inertial confinement via electromagnetic compression was workable, and also demonstrated straight up kinetic (vaporized tungsten wire ala Winterberg [1] ) as well. But laser pumped compression is a lot more convenient in many respects, especially if the drivers can run at a high duty cycle.
OTOH we can still do it with a plutonium initiator, works just fine.
[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedwardt_Winterberg is the guy, I have the paper but it’s fallen off the Internet for some reason...
