I recall in the past, they used to say the Time magazine’s man of the year was the biggest newsmaker of the year, whether for good or for bad.

That’s how Hitler and Joseph Stalin and Ayatollah Khomeini have been given this recognition. They were major newsmakers. It wasn’t really supposed to be an award as such.

I’m sure those criteria changed at some point. Based on the traditional criteria , Bin Laden should have been the man of the year in 2001. The people who run Time Magazine couldn’t see recognizing bin Laden, so instead they honored Rudy Giuliani for his response to 9/11.

Yep. And that’s the way it should be today. So Zelensky really isn’t a bad choice.

The problem is that “Person of the Year” sounds like an award, an honor for doing something good. Perhaps it should have been called “Newsmaker of the Year” from the very start.
