Anne Sacoolas, the wife of a U.S. diplomat, will not return to Britain for sentencing this week after admitting causing the death of a teenager by driving carelessly in England three years ago, a British court has said.
Harry Dunn, 19, died in August 2019 after his motorcycle was hit by a car driven on the wrong side of the road by Sacoolas near RAF Croughton, an air force base in the English county of Northamptonshire that is used by the U.S. military.
Sacoolas, whose husband worked as a U.S. intelligence officer at the base, left Britain shortly after the accident, claiming diplomatic immunity from criminal prosecution and the United States refused to extradite her.

YOU’RE the reason why all the crosswalks in London have “Look Right” painted on the street by the curb!
When in Rome-—Do as the Romans Do.
Of course she won’t. Laws are only for us chumps. Not them.
“hit by a car driven on the wrong side of the road”
How drunk was this lady???
Actually, almost 70% of the world drives on the right hand side:
She’s not a diplomat.
The Brits and their former colonials + Japan it appears....
Sacoolas, whose husband worked as a U.S. intelligence officer at the base,
= = =
So, is she really a diplomat?????
If you don't live in a 'left hand side of the road' country, where do you practice it without causing havoc? If you do live in a 'left hand side of the road' country, then you don't need to practice.
Her husband is a CIA officer (not military intelligence) and she is a former CIA officer. I realize this case is tragic but there are bigger issues at play. Do you really want the wife of a CIA officer sitting in a jail in the UK.? How long do you think it would take the Russians to embed Natasha as her cell mate and let her husband know what will happen to her unless he “helps” them a little? Diplomatic immunity and status of forces agreements are necessary for countries that send personnel overseas. Putting your people into positions where they can be used as pawns compromises our national security.
That’s the reason I am afraid to drive in England and all the left side driving countries (Japan, Bahamas...).
When I was visiting there, I always used cab or bus. She should too.
I drive everywhere else, even in the most crazy driving countries!
BTW, you do not see too many GB registered cars in the rest of the world. English are afraid to drive on the right side!
I can understand this, and agree.
But don’t try to pass her off as a diplomat.
“When in Rome-—Do as the Romans Do.”
Or as the Vandals did... 😁
Sounds like Anne is a menace to society.
Saw that in Guyana, their border with Brazil has signs all over the place showing "we drive on the left".
At least with UK, Australia, and Japan, they're isolated land masses so they don't worry about those things.
The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations governs who has immunity. It doesn’t cover just diplomats, it extends to their staff and families. Arguing over whether she’s a diplomat or not is semantics, she either fits in the realm of covered persons or not. Someone above our pay grade decided she does.

You are absolutely right!!
Can’t give you figures, but it’s a widespread view, especially among road safety organisations, that drivers convicted of traffic offences, especially with death or serious injury, get off lightly. The theoretical maximum sentence is rarely applied. For instance, for this offence (causing death by careless driving) the sentence is often a large fine + a few years driving ban. Also there’s often a plea bargain in which the prosecution of the more serious ‘causing death by dangerous driving’ charge accepts a guilty plea to the lesser ‘careless’ charge. (I seem to remember this actually happened in this case, not sure.) Juries also seem reluctant to convict (’there but the grace of God..’ mentality, it’s assumed.)
Regardless of the harm caused (death in this case) and absent any political angle (such as resentment over diplomatic immunity), I imagine that juries find it excessive to send a driver to prison for simple negligence with no aggravating factors, just a momentary mental lapse. Now, if alcohol, drugs or extreme speeding were involved, that would be (to me) an entirely different matter.
No kidding. That’s why I saved it. It was so bizarre.
