Rep. Kevin McCarthy readies for floor showdown in Speakership bid as opponents dig in heels

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is expected to go to the House floor to fight for the Speakership as his GOP opponents signal their stance is hardening.

McCarthy this week started posturing for a floor showdown and turning up the heat on those withholding support.

On Newsmax on Monday, McCarthy warned that House Democrats could pick the Speaker if Republicans “play games” on the House floor on Jan. 3. He shot down a question from CNN on Tuesday on whether he would step down in the race for Speaker if he does not get support from 218 Republicans. And on Fox News Tuesday night, he warned that if he does not get a majority of Speaker votes, GOP investigative priorities cannot go forward.

“We can’t start investigating [Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro] Mayorkas. We can’t secure the border. We can’t lower the gasoline price by making us energy independent,” McCarthy said.

McCarthy won support from more than 80 percent of the House Republican Conference for the Speakership nomination. But 31 Republicans voted against him, and with the GOP winning a slim majority — around 222 seats to around 212 for Democrats, all of whom are expected to vote for Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) for Speaker — just a handful of GOP defectors on the floor could force multiple Speaker ballots or sink his bid.

A Speaker can be elected with fewer than 218 votes, as the nominee only needs support from a majority of those voting for a candidate. Vacancies, such as the seat for the late Rep. Donald McEachin (D-Va.), who died on Monday, absences and “present” votes lower the threshold that a Speaker will have to reach, and potentially give McCarthy some wiggle room.

The Ruling Oligarchy has already decided who the next Speaker will be, and they'll manipulate whatever they have to to get to that goal (i.e. Democrats voting present to lower the vote threshold)

McCarthy is a snake. He won’t do any of the things he’s touting to get elected. He’s McConnell 2.0

In true anti-America, Me First, Permanent DC, My Turn fashion McCommy will hold votes and keep on voting until he gets the result he wants.

He can win if he just adopts the reasonable rules the Freedom Caucus want to have implemented.

This is why they don’t want to adopt the freedom caucus rules. If they did the Speaker wouldn’t have the power to pass legislation with democrats.

“Marjorie Taylor Greene for Speaker!”

YES!

Will someone with a brain ask Kevin McCarthy exactly HOW he intends to lower gas prices?

“He can win if...”

He can win OR Hakeem Jeffries will be Speaker.

Look, I favor destruction of the Republican Party. They have existed much too long for any good they have ever done.

But you guys who are still Republican believers - you have elected basically 30 Congressmen who see things your way. The House is aligned against you 405-30.

You keep making plans where the Republican majority is going to do the things you want. THEY’RE NOT. They hate you. They despise you. They will NEVER enable the nation to recover.

Wake up and smell the coffee. If you want a Republican Speaker, his name is Kevin McCarthy. Why you would want that is up to you.

Well, the GOP is consistent about one thing anyway ... how to eff-up a much needed victory. (I guess you gotta excel in something!)

I hear you, but changing the rules like the Freedom caucus wants limits his power. And we can investigate Biden and stop the Trump nonsense.

And Jeffries won’t be speaker UNLESS GOP members vote for him. More than likely what would happen is a super lefty GOP person would be speaker as the left GOP vote with Democrats on an agreeable lefty GOP congresscritter.

Watch closely, as this is the only time you will see him fight for something. Our choices are between dog $hit (him) and Cat $hit whit stinks more. Because the repukes are spineless uniparty members.

Jim Jordan needs to talk him into giving the freedom caucus what they want, if he doesn’t it means McCarthy will rule like Pelosi.

He can win if he just adopts the reasonable rules the Freedom Caucus want to have implemented.

He can win if he adopts those rules and that doesn't cost him any RINO votes.

I'm afraid that's not the way it works.

Hakeem Jeffries only needs 4. Jim Jordan needs 188.

If one of the five noes instead votes present, then McCarthy is in.

And then he shouldn’t win. Rinos are destroying the nation.
