Beto O'Rourke returned a $1 million donation from controversial cryptocurrency magnate Sam Bankman-Fried less than a week before Election Day, the Texas Tribune's James Barragán reported Tuesday.
FTX, Bankman-Fried's cryptocurrency exchange, was valued at $32 billion before its abrupt collapse earlier this month sparked widespread panic amongst crypto investors and industry leaders.
FTX filed for bankruptcy and Bankman-Fried stepped down as its top executive on Nov. 11, just three days after Election Day. Chris Evans, an O'Rourke campaign spokesperson, told Barragán that the decision to return Bankman-Fried's donation was not connected to the controversy now swirling around Bankman-Fried and FTX.
According to Barragán, Evans explained that with other donations of that size, O'Rourke usually spoke with donors beforehand. O'Rourke had not spoken with Bankman-Fried before receiving his $1 million donation, which Evans said caught the campaign off guard.
“This contribution was unsolicited and the campaign’s upcoming [Texas Ethics Commission] report will show that it was returned back on November 4, prior to the news stories that would later come out about the donor,” Evans told Barragán.

Good for him. Everyone else will probably be legally required to refund such money as well, since it was fraudulently given.
Francis O’Rourke is certainly wealthy through his wife’s family, but he does not use much of her wealth in trying for political office.
Instead they use OPM, and there are plenty of stories about the “dark money” outfits that direct donations to Dems and RINOs that can affect an election.
The fact that O’Rourke received a million dollar donation that he did not expect shows how corrupt the system is.
He certainly has received money from plenty of other Dem donors, and never asked about the funds provenance. See FB and other Silicon Valley billionaires, and their wives.
Any why does he spend $100 million to win an office that pays about $200,000 a year?
How could he have accepted that large a donation, the Max is about $5800 or less.
Her Father is worth some $500 million or so is the claim.
