Slightly off-topic, but please bear with me. Last month while subbing at the local junior high, some seventh graders asked me about Jeffrey Dahmer. Appears they had all been watching the Netflix series on his life. It bothered me. I told them that while I was aware of what he had done, no one went into excruciating detail of his crimes. But I have to ask, why would parents let their young teenage kids watch a bio of a murderous cannibal? Between streaming and the internet, kids are being exposed to dangerous crap.

No doubt Bing’s co-workers had also watched the series, otherwise why even make the comparison? Bing wasn’t even born when Dahmer committed his crimes.

I overheard some teens trash-talk by saying someone in their group looked like Dahmer.

I presumed it was some internet thing, and perhaps that show you mention is the source.

“...why would parents let their young teenage kids...”
-
Teenagers “do” more than what their parent’s “allow” them to do.
You were one in the past, I guess you were an obedient child.

Because parents are idiots who allow their kids to have streaming services on their phones and tablets. Parents have zero idea what their kids are watching.

Short answer? People like being scared or overwhelmed once in a while. Some folks have a bigger appetite for that feeling than others. Back in the late 70’s I recall hearing about this new film series called ‘Face Of Death’. I heard about it, but wasn’t all that interested. Many others were.

In today’s era, we have another film called SAW.
Just that name alone, I knew it wasn’t for me. It’s very popular with some. Quentin Tarrantino movies too. Big time!

It can start with younger kids too.
I recall the fad of Cabbage Patch Kids was jokingly parodied
by a deck of playing cards called “Garbage Pail Kids”
That deck showed a lot of vulgar and gross distortions of diseased animals and cartoon characters.
