Down in South Texas, there is a Democrat who votes a lot like a Republican. I'm talking about Henry Cuellar, who was just re-elected in District 28. Therefore, it makes a lot of sense for future speaker McCarthy to woo the guy from #28. This is from a story in the Wall Street Journal:
Allies of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) made multiple calls to Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas over the weekend and asked him if he would switch parties to expand the GOP majority, according to five people familiar with the calls.
The pitch to Mr. Cuellar came as Mr. McCarthy struggles to reach the 218-vote threshold needed on the House floor to secure the speakership if his party wins a narrow majority.
One person said Mr. Cuellar, who sits on the powerful appropriations committee, was offered committee positions and asked what it would take for him to switch.
Mr. Cuellar turned them down, according to multiple people.
For a little update, McCarthy will be the speaker if the GOP wins the House, and they are pretty close to winning.
My sense is that Cuellar will remain a Democrat just like Senator Manchin stays in his party. They both have more power as the maverick in their parties. In other words, everybody is wooing them for their elusive votes. Also, Rep. Cuellar may be positioning himself to run for governor of Texas in 2026. Cuellar may be the only Democrat who can win a county in Texas outside Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.

Kev and turtle. What a pair. 😠

= = =
They don’t have a pair, between the both of them.
Cuellar is the last remaining prolife Democrat in Congress. Back in 2000, there were about 25/30. All shooed away by the Godless progressive wing.
The Reps have won the House. They will have 221 or 222 seats. Cuellar’s seat will make little difference now.
McCarthy would be the third stooge that goes with Boehner and Ryan
Kevin McCarthy is a useless ass.
The republicans are being so obvious about their attempts to get Cuellar to switch parties, their going to make a target out of him; a target of Dem retaliation- maybe.
Maybe the Dems don’t care. They would rather weed any non-believers in No Borders/ No Budget Caps philosophy out of their party. Look at how they have isolated Manchin and Sinema.

Cuellar, who once upon a time (long ago) posed as a sensible moderate Democrat, has voted solidly liberal since he was safely re-elected to his second term. Perhaps he’s not ultra-liberal enough though — he came t-h-i-s close to losing in the 2022 Democrat primary to a certified wacko femiNazi. Had Cuellar lost in the primary, the Republicans probably would have picked up that House seat (Democrat fraud notwithstanding).
Even after than close call he’s not going to switch parties and even in the very unlikely event that he does switch he is absolutely no conservative or (at this time) even a moderate — except by the standards of today’s Democrat nutjobs. Cuellar votes 80% liberal now, maybe he’d vote “only” 60% liberal if he accepted McCarthy’s bribe and crossed the aisle.
It’s over, Turtle and Deep State win again.

Which is why the GOPe turds will NEVER see another red penny from this old boy.

Neither party relies one iota on nickel-and-dime donations from the little people like us (though they’ll gladly accept those donations).
Fat cat DC politicians and party-controlling string pullers couldn’t care less if they ever see another penny from the likes of us — their only job is to keep the major $$$$$ rolling in from corporations (which they regulate) and from sugar-daddy billionaires.
Anyone who thinks their contributions — or lack of them — at the PARTY level make one bit of difference (or are even appreciated) is naive. Anyone who thinks their tiny individual contributions give them a voice, however small, in party policy, is hopelessly naive.
Individual candidates, particularly conservatives who are shunned by the big liberal establishment Republican party PACs, are the ones to whom our hard-earned dollars should be sent. And they are the ONLY ones.
If the GOP is trying to woo Cuellar, their objective is to taint him with his South Texas supporters. He has support from both GOP & Dem voters in his district, and has for years.
Interesting. Thank you.
This is useful information.
Cuellar is not too well known nationally.
