I’ve seen and stood next to “Sentimental Journey”. Betty Grable. Nose art. I worked with a man the was a navigator on a B-17 over Germany. It’s a heartbreaking event no matter the planes but it “the B-17” was a great plane. Lawrence got to ride in the “Journey”. They took a trip around our town in honor of his service. Godspeed to those that died. Hopefully it was not a total wipe out.

daum ... that’s the second restored exhibition B-17 to go down [the first was the Liberty Belle that went down in 2014 ... i got to ride it in 2010 ... photographed some images through the Norden bomb sight when we flew a low altitude bombing run over downtown Denver ... fortunately, there wasn’t much flak at the time ...]

“Almost looks deliberate. How could that small plane not avoid that?”

Looks like he went belly up to the B17. When you lose sight like that, you need to pull up higher, cut WAY inside or go more wings level and slide to the outside. I suspect the pilot didn’t want to look bad and thought he’d regain sight in a moment. Lots of people have died doing rejoins like that.

Rides are not given during active participation in the show. They are for 20 minutes loops around the local area afterwards or during slow parts.

Two planes doing a fly-by at the same time. Somebody made a mistake. The P-61 is of course much faster than than the B-17.

“I can clearly observe the relationship of the pilot’s eye level with respect to the wing”

I’ve done a bajillion rejoins in F4s and F-111s. Yes, it is easy to lose sight - and that is because the body of the aircraft comes between you and the guy you are rejoining on.

Best option is reduce bank angle, go low and slide a bit outside and behind, then adjust again as you regain sight. In some cases, pulling way high or cutting very hard inside may be the right answer.

Bottom line, the guy rejoining is responsible for maintaining deconfliction. Lead is working on other stuff and needs to be predictable.

Idiot.... it wasn’t a P-51 and it wasn’t a kamakaze murder suicide. You can’t even get the planes right. Quit slandering that pilot who simply screwed up unless you can offer some proof that this pilot left a suicide note or something.
You ought to be ashamed of your jackass self.

Have you?

Actually I have, many hours. Your analysis of vision presented by a fisheye lens is distorted. You do not have an understanding of what is visible.

Sorry, it’s a P-63, not a P-61 Black Widow.

That was very informative! Thank you so much for an experienced analysis. We’ve just been waving our ignorance around.

I’ve got 2500 flying F-16s. The F-16 has some of the best cockpit visibility of any fighter ever. Much better than anything produced in WW2. Once you roll into a bank, you lose visibility opposite the direction you’re turning. End of issue. Doesn’t matter what you’re flying. The P-63 in this case was in a turn with its belly toward the B-17. Unless the pilot had a window in the floor of his airplane, he couldn’t see the B-17 until it was too late. He either never knew it was there, or he tried to prevent a collision by turning away (rolling into more bank) from the B-17. That’s a bad move because it makes seeing what you’re trying to avoid even more difficult.

And something else... that B-17 was in standard green camo designed to make it harder for fighters above to see them. In a moment of inattention, a brief moment in view, it may have worked.
Tragic...

I have stated that the fighter was a Bell P-63. I have NOT indicated it was murder suicide. You are responding to the wrong post or you are reading impaired.

I'd guess high speed-high performance aircraft are a little tricky to fly, and may not have great handling characteristics at low speed.

Also, that was quite a fireball from the B-17, shouldn't these plane be flying with minimum fuel?
