Recall in 2015 when he said of John McCain (and keep in mind, I'm no McCain fan) "He's not a war hero. He's a war hero 'cause he was captured. I like people that weren't captured, OK?" (emphasis supplied.)
My uncle was a B-17 pilot in WWII, and many of his friends were captured. They were true heroes. I found the remark beyond careless and offensive.
The point is that DJT chose to insult and offend, when tact and diplomacy would have better served. McCain (and many, many Vets never forgot his foolish remark.) Skilled diplomats can disagree with folks in a reasoned way, and it's possible to highlight differences without a smackdown.
Move forward to McCain's vote on the GOPs excellent "skinny repeal" bill that would have removed the individual mandate for what's-his-name care.
McCain settled a score with Trump when there needn't have been one to settle.
And, as Reagan was fond of saying, there he goes again.
OTOH, he’s worth north of seven billion. And his rallies need stadiums to contain the attendees.

As I am sure you know the issue with McCain was not that he was captured.
The issue is what happened after McCain was captured—his father’s role etc.
President Trump’s remarks were typical “shorthand”—not the way I would have worded it for sure—and it is such a delicate subject probably would have been best not to go there at all.
