The Republicans had a pretty good midterm election despite what pundits are claiming. The GOP must win three of the remaining four Senate races to win control of the upper chamber — a goal well within reach as Republicans lead in Nevada and Wisconsin. And the party is within spitting distance of a House majority.
But no red wave. A combination of better-than-expected Democratic enthusiasm and underperforming Republican candidates squandered several opportunities to flip House seats and give the GOP a sizable House majority in January.
How did this happen? If you ask most of the media, the fault for the underperforming Republican Party rests with Donald Trump.
Former Obama campaign strategist David Plouffe said, “I think you have to say Donald Trump has now presided over two disastrous midterm elections.” That’s a matter of opinion. First, Trump did not “preside” over the 2022 midterms. Plouffe is getting his talking points mixed up with reality. Trump wasn’t on the ballot no matter how hard Democrats wished it were so.
Secondly, 2018 wasn’t much of a “disaster,” given that Republicans gained two Senate seats. They lost the House — just as Democrats will almost certainly lose the House in 2022.
“Given the history of presidents in power, Democrats controlling all of Washington, inflation, this should’ve been a much stronger night for Republicans,” Plouffe said. “A bunch of reasons for that. But at the top of them is Donald Trump. He’s deeply unpopular, he supported a bunch of horrible Senate candidates who may end up coughing up the football here.”
The fact that Trump is “unpopular” outside the Republican Party was pointed out by several pundits. This is “analysis”? Trump entered office in 2017 and his favorable numbers were almost immediately underwater.

And as far as those “horrible” Senate candidates, some are winning, and some are losing. That brings us to the most salient point about Trump and the Republican Party: Donald Trump was a boon to candidates in districts and regions where he was popular, and he was a drag in districts and regions where he wasn’t popular.
Another popular media game last night was putting the performance of Trump-backed candidates side by side with the performance of Ron DeSantis.
“Throughout the primaries, Trump touted a roughly 92% success record with his endorsements ...”
“So far, Trump appears on track for a roughly 91.5% success rate with his general election picks, having eked out 218 victories and 20 losses with about 30 races outstanding.”
I’d say Trump is still quite popular and he just helped put a lot of MAGA supporters in office.
I don’t see much drag there.
Look. Mitch and repub leadership is uniparty.
Mitch did not want repubs to control the senate. We all know this. Pulling the funds from several tough races went too far, its the proof.
If we also won the senate, its tougher for mitch and the leadership to look believable when they come up with rationalizations as to why they can’t now do anything they said they would do to either deal with Biden or even try to fix things without him.
Mitch doesnt want to fix anything. Hes uniparty.
As a minority they can say we cant do anything and appear more valid as to why they aren’t even trying.
There's a good chance that Florida Democrats were asked to "take one for Team Democrat" to scuttle the Trump ship once and for all.
I know that Democrat Florida vote fraud is rife.
Yes, there was too much open sabotage on the part of Establishment Republicans.
Michigan 3rd CD, the Alaska House seat and Herschel Walker.
.
The GOP wanted to win and wants Joe to win too.
They worked with Joe and refused to run a Biden Resistance campaign, and they found out you can’t prop up their Leader and beat them by a meaningful margin.
It’s that simple.
Just like they tried to win the Senate last time without supporting Trump.
They were shocked they lost the Senate then. Lindsey Graham had a presser saying Pinch me, I’m dreaming, after Trump lost and he thought they won the Senate (and said so).
They are playing a dangerous game.
“So far, Trump appears on track for a roughly 91.5% success rate with his general election picks, having eked out 218 victories and 20 losses with about 30 races outstanding.”
Lol you guys are grasping. If I make predictions and 90% are to the effect of ‘Arizona won’t be hit by a hurricane tomorrow’ and ‘the grocery store is going to have milk on Friday’ and 90% come true does that mean I’m a psychic or some demigod who can bend society to my whim? Now the primaries you might have a point that Trump does or did still have a lot of influence but fat load of good that’ll do us on its own.
Something creepy about it. That girl on tucker saying she kicked their asses or something. I couldn’t look at her
He could have shut his pipe hole about Desanctimonious and be a team player
Its always someone elses fault.
Well if its always someone else’s fault and trump can’t stop them or influence them to change course the end result is the same as if its his fault anyway. An ineffective leader with good ideas that never get implemented in the end is the same as an outright bad one in that they should both hang up their hat.
At this point, I would be VERY surprised if Donald Trump’s big announcement next tuesday is to say ‘Yes, I will run for President in 2024!” He’s got to be reassessing the scene, based on last nights results. The closer we got to the Mid Term’s voting date, it appeared that Trump’s self control was becoming more and more uncontrolled, uninhibited and potentially damaging to other republicans.
“He could have been more gracious!” said Trump about after deSantis had received Trump’s endorsement.
*Incredibly conceited, disrespectful and condescending.
“I know things about deSantis that I could be saying. Things maybe only his wife knows!”
* Gossipy, irresponsibly and almost slanderously so.
“I think if he runs, he could hurt himself very badly!”
*Classic Concern Trolling.
Melania and someone like Rudy Gulliani need to talk with Donald about these past few days. “What did you think you were doing with those remarks? What was your intention and does that benefit the GOP or just you?
You have confused/ frustrated/ angered a lot of republicans with these very public remarks. What is your long game?”
.
I think you guys are being led down the primrose path.
The minute Trump quits or is eliminated they start the same treatment on the new front runner. He’ll suddenly be a Russian agent wanting people to die, wanting kids in cages, practice incest, be a tax cheat, women come out with ugly accusations, and they run rumors about his relationship with his wife.
You’re going to have a new problem very quickly.
They have seen the formula - it’s not going away.
.
Look, I am 100% for DeSantis now, but how dare you trash Trump like that? He did everything he could to improve America.
Your words are toxic gruel, Pal.
He and Hannity and the Swamp ruined our primary in Pa, and we wound up with a man who eked out a win, but who was second choice of very few.
Thats true but at least this other person won’t be helping to throw fuel on the fire by spending all his time making stream of consciousness tweets and carrying on high profile petty feuds with everybody to the right or left or having a minion turn on him every other week.
Trump has a couple of very rare virtues for a politician. His flair and unwillingness to back down. But he is very lacking in many other skills. Unfortunately these two are not enough to win on their own.
.
Run DeSantis.
But Impeachment, Recusal, Raids, Special Counsels, FISA - are still only going to apply to Republicans.
If you think for one second they aren’t going to use their playbook to get DeSantis, you should be committed to the Naive section of the Mental Institution.
.
Ooooo, we got us a genuine tin plated dimmocommie TROLL here. Go whine over at the NY Post or some other trash pit more suited to your hilarious butt hurt writ large. But don't stay up too late--you've got school tomorrow.
Maybe it’s just me, but I see huge red flags with candidates that don’t feel any need to campaign, conduct news, interviews, or debate opponents.
The only one I see WINNING, is DeSantis, who smashed the Dems in FL, while the BLOATED EGO was attacking him!
Trump only cares about himself and is clueless that the country wants something better than his old, tired schtick.
I can’t help it, I’m done with the zealots who worship at his ego altar, get out of the way, it’s time to move on to young blood.
