According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data, more than 227,000 migrants were encountered along the southern border in September which is 35,000 more than September 2021.
According to the New York Post, the more than 227,000 encounters represents an all-time high for the month of September, and all indications show that those numbers will not be slowing down. For context, there were just 57,674 encounters in September 2020 and 52,546 in September 2019.
The numbers show a disturbing trend occurring soon after President Biden was sworn into the White House in January 2021. In February, encounters increased from 78,414 in January to 101,099 in Biden’s first full month in office. By July 2021, encounters topped 200,000 for the first time with a peak number of 241,136 in May.
In fiscal year 2022, CBP reported more than 2.3 million encounters with migrants at the southern border. That is the most ever recorded by CBP and tops FY2021 by more than 644,000 encounters.
Those numbers, according to Fox News, do not even include 599,000 “gotaways” that CBP sources say “evaded capture” in 2022.
CBP Commissioner Chris Magnus said, “CBP and DHS will continue to work with our partners in the region to address the root causes of migration, expand legal pathways, facilitate removals, and take thousands of smugglers off the streets. No matter what smugglers say, those who do not have a legal basis to remain in the country will be removed and people should not make the dangerous journey.”
The numbers, however, seem to tell a different story. They tell a story of the CBP being overwhelmed and unable to keep up with the sheer number of migrants trying to cross the border. They tell a story of a federal government response that is unable to handle the problem and is unwilling to change.
The numbers also show 20 known or suspected terror suspects being encountered at the border in September alone and many more than that encountered for the year. If at least 500,000 migrants made it across the border as “gotaways,” the question must be asked, “how many of those were suspected terrorists too?”
