News that Ben Sasse would likely be leaving the U.S. Senate to become president of the University of Florida has aroused varied commentary—most of it critical of Sasse. But one take has probably been underrated—Sasse’s exodus is merely the latest example of how Trump has vanquished an entire generation of once-promising young conservative stars from politics.
Think about it. When Donald Trump came down that escalator in 2015, the Republican Party was about to field what was then seen as an impressive and diverse array of future young conservative stars. The names included Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Sen. Marco Rubio, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, and Sen. Ted Cruz. (There was also Rand Paul and Chris Christie, among others—though they fall just outside the Gen-X category.) While I might not compare them to the quarterback class of 1983 (John Elway, Jim Kelly, and Dan Marino), the field felt pretty stacked at the time.
Take Jindal, for example. He was the first Indian-American governor, he had been a congressman, and he had served as secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (among other jobs). And he was just 46 years old! Today, he sells aluminum siding in Yazoo City, Mississippi. Okay, I’m kidding. I have no idea what he’s doing—and that’s precisely my point.
Half of them were humiliated and eventually co-opted by Trump (Rubio and Cruz), while the other half were essentially pushed out of electoral politics (Jindal and Walker)—for the time being, at least.
And then, there were other rising stars on the bench who didn’t run for president in 2016. Take Nikki Haley, the then-governor of South Carolina. After endorsing Rubio in the primaries (and attacking Trump), she miraculously managed to not only become Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations, but also get out relatively unscathed.

The Republicans could have stuck with the same old policies that would ensure their defeat in election after election. Instead they chose to stop the endless wars of choice, actually mean it when they said they would secure the border, actually show they meant it when they said they would renegotiate unequal trade treaties, tariff China and bring manufacturing jobs back, and actually stand up to woke rot and corruption.
As a result they have a new coalition that appeals to a broader group of people and which wins elections. The Daily Beast and other Leftist outlets are sad about it.

It would be interesting to know President Trump did it. For starters, I think Donald Trump was underestimated. He was neither an academic, nor a career politician. It should be remembered that another businessman, Hermain Cain, was leading the field (2012?) until the liberal press took him out. Businessmen outsiders cannot be counted out. Trump reacted to attacks, rather than politely take it on the chin, the Republican way. He was a fighter and would fight for us. Trump talked sense, at least as he saw it, instead of following polling and the advice of handlers. Trump was patriotic, loving America and Americans.
After four years of President Trump, it can be safely said that he made America great again. That counts for more in my book than the author's lament that Trump lacked class.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way. Trump led. The article provided a list of those unwilling to follow. Now, they are out of the way.
Only time will tell if he will be successful getting all the necessary voters he needs as a minority party to succeed.Does that minority party have a name? As much as it might hurt you to know. Trump IS the Republican Party.
BTW, Trump (R) (has already) accomplished more in one term than any other President in your lifetime.

I prefer a candidate who has principled and consistent positions. If I don’t agree with a couple of them I can still support him.
But if he wanders all over the field he has lost me.

The gop party is by party registration a minority party compared to a party that has more registered party members.
For the gop to win an election requires most of republican vote and some independents or some democrats.
For democrats to win All they need is every democrat vote.
