Did Portland protests help or harm Rose City’s reputation and race relations?

Portland area voters strongly believe 2020′s racial justice protests that often devolved into raucous melees sullied the city’s reputation and didn’t do much to improve race relations, polling commissioned by The Oregonian/OregonLive shows.

The protests over more than 100 nights did more harm than good to Portland’s image, according to 81% of 600 likely voters polled in the tri-county area. DHM Research conducted the poll from Oct. 5 through Monday.

Portland police used force more than 6,000 times over the course of the protests. Some protesters set fires, threw fireworks and other projectiles at police and broke windows of businesses and government buildings.

Washington County resident Michelle Wallace-Ruttan said people who rioted ended up taking their anger out on police officers and businesses, rather than raising awareness for social justice causes.

“We saw anger, but we didn’t see results through the level of damage that was done,” the 50-year-old said.

Portland resident Christy Splitt said she thought sensationalized national media coverage fueled the impression among people outside the area that “protesters have taken over the city.”

Poll responses varied significantly when accounting for political affiliation and geography.

Some 98% of Republicans polled said the protests hurt Portland’s reputation, compared to 70% of Democrats. Clackamas County voters were most likely to agree that Portland’s status had fallen, pegged at 89%, while 75% of Multnomah County voters felt the same way.

Why did the protests stop? Are the problems that were protested gone now? Or did the support money run out, and where did that money come from?

Protest were not about protesting anything. They were funded by billionaires trying to sow chaos against things that are orange and bad

If anybody answers the question with anything except “Hell YES it harmed them!!!”, then that person is a brain-dead liberal.

When a city not only tolerates but promotes criminal behavior, people are bound to notice. Even asking the question highlights the absurd. I would ask what these people are smoking, but we already know.

We rent a beach house on the Oregon coast every summer. I go way out of the way to avoid driving through Portland. It’s become a third world armpit.

Wow, the Dems got exactly what they want and 3/4 of them think it hurt? They need more of it, good and hard.

Probably true. Notice how it all just faded away when Trump “lost”?

Oh, clearly Portland’s reputation was helped. I don’t see how anyone could even question THAT. LOL

Unreal

We had dinner with several friends last night. One is from Vancouver, WA, across the river from Portland. He was telling me that Portland will recover; it may take ten years, but it will recover. I never bother arguing with him on political issues. He couldn’t be more wrong. It’s on a Detroit trajectory.

I remember Portland from the 1980s. It was starting a decline even then with "Urban Outdoorsmen" throughout the once beautiful areas of the city.

We had about 25 staff there and they represented 95% of the personnel problems we had! While they only represented less than 10% of our staff, they continually sniped at each other (even though they were all lefties) and were a fulltime job for HR and our legal staff!

“protesters set fires, threw fireworks and other projectiles at police and broke windows of businesses and government buildings.”

And that’s considered just a bit of “raucous melees” by that liberal rag, the Oregonian.

But will they change how they vote?

My money is on “no”.

Liberals are incapable of connecting dots. Cause and effect to them is a foreign concept.

There is ONE, and only ONE way to recover: every elected official for the next generation needs to be an America First Conservative. They need to act by getting rid of any stupid laws currently on the books, enforcing the laws that aren't stupid, and not tolerating ANY radical liberal idiocy that might spring up. The liberal fruitcakes that currently inhabit Portland need to leave en masse and be replaced by God-fearing, America-loving people who want to see a better tomorrow.

If they can't do that, then your observation on Portland's trajectory is correct.

All the little fag magnets think life is just a movie and that they are the leading stars in it. It’s time for supposed grownups to grow up and start taking charge of the world again. Force the schools to start teaching reality again to all the little Snowflake Movie Star wannabes.

No one cares about Rose City or Portland. Just another dumpster fire. The question should be “who would move to Portland”
