The problem is that when the rat is rabid and has become aggressive and has been trying to attack people, you can’t just walk off and leave it. It needs to be put down.

There’s no choice here. PUtin needs to return Ukrainian land, which he wont do because of arrogance. Or other Russians need to do a rat killing.

Putin did give up on Afghanistan. Wonder what made him do that. Any lessons we can apply? It took 20 years.

Well Biden sure showed Putin how to leave Afghanistan:

US military admits Biden Ordered Kabul airstrike killed 7 children, not ISIS terrorist

And abandon hundreds of Americans there.

It wasnt Putin who gave up on Afghanistan, that was Gorbachev. Putin was a mid-level guy at the KGB at the time.

Putins problem in part is that he is the sole boss, the one and only, having got rid of or suppressed all others in a position to challenge him.

Gorbachev effectively was the first among equals, the chairman of a committee. He could present a withrawal as a collective decision.

And the Soviet Union was in no way as invested in Afghanistan as Russia is in Ukraine. This is a way bigger war and Russias sunk costs are tremendous.

Another complication is that everyone knows that Putin started this. Gorbachev was dealing with some other guys’ mess.

Gorbachev withdrew from Afghanistan in 1989, 10 or 11 years before Putin took power.
