A Russian airstrike has destroyed a humanitarian convoy in southern Ukraine leaving dozens of civilians dead and wounded, Ukrainian officials said today.
Images show how a single rocket landed close to a queue of cars waiting at a checkpoint as they drove out of the Ukrainian-controlled city of Zaporizhzhia into nearby Russian-occupied territory in the early hours of Friday, shredding the vehicles with shrapnel.
At least 25 people were killed in the strike and another 50 wounded, the prosecutor's office said. Oleksandr Starukh, the Zaporizhzhia regional governor, said all of the victims were civilians who were driving into Russian-occupied territory to distribute aid and to try and get their relatives out.
Kyrylo Tymoshenko, one of Zelensky's senior advisers, said Russia had fired a total of 16 S-300 anti-aircraft missiles at Ukrainian territory, four of which landed - destroying the queue of cars along with a nearby car market.
The attack took place just hours before a speech by Vladimir Putin in which he will announce Zaporizhzhia - along with Donetsk, Luhansk and Kherson regions - are being annexed to Russia under the guise of protecting them.
And it came as Putin's propagandists used their state TV platforms to insist that Russia's nuclear arsenal is in full working order, after the despot threatened to use them to defend the 'new territories'.

Why were they driving into Russian controlled territory? Were their vehicles marked as belonging to a humanitarian aid organization? If not, then WTF did they expect? Unless that was the plan...
Zelenskiyy has it exactly right. Russians are barbarians… whether Tsarist, Soviet or the current RF, Russian tactics of murder, occupation, rape and plunder never change. Gen. Patton was spot on when terming Russians “scurvy savages.”
Yes, because Russia apparently
- shells a nuclear power station its own troops are guarding
- dropped a missile in a camp housing Ukrainian POWs they intend to interrogate
- bombed its own pipeline
- dropped a missile on the people in a territory they just absorbed as Russian.
In fact Russian media was with the convoy and they report them as the refugees from the Zelensky regime attacked by UAF.
I don’t see anyone from Ze on the ground.
I expect no less from the drunk, incompetent, and embittered Russians. Committing grotesque atrocities is part of their military heritage.
Who authorized this civilian convoy on the Ukrainian side?
