It was a world shelling destination back then, don’t know about now, being continuously picked over.

Probably ship them in from China now.

Mad Hatter is one of our faves too. That, the Bubble Room, and the Island Cow for every day dining

“I bet the storm brought up a lot of good seashells”

Southwest Florida is not the hot zone for big storms northern gulf or Carolinas are

The weather systems have to be perfect to turn them to 30 or 40 degrees northeast

This one was ad though no question

And a daylight storm

It seems the worst pick nighttime

We used to do thanksgivings at the very first house to the right past the tiny bridge that divides captiva from sanibel

It was huge and thanksgiving week was cheap

Pool

8 bedrooms

Elevator

Deep water dock on the bay

Beach right across street maybe 40 yards

Id take everybody inc some extended family would fly down

We did that maybe six years

Loved that place

Captiva is a hair more quaint with that huge resort at northern tip

I haven’t been in two years

Kids are mostly grown

That Italian place sanibel on stilts with the big tomato cans for pizza placemat

First time we stayed a little in on south sanibel

Florida cinder blocks right on water

Cool place owners really nice

Walk out front door from cottages onto beach

A gem of America those two islands

Shame

Know the house you’re talking about. Never stayed there. We have stayed just up SanCap road at tweenwaters inn. Our go to is the westwind inn on west gulf drive.

Wonder what happened to this one?

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/16512-Captiva-Dr-Captiva-FL-33924/45385135_zpid/

About ten years ago, a house on the northern tip of Sanibel was listed by Sotheby’s for somewhere north of $12 million that someone had poured money into. Scuptures, stained glass, intricate tile mosaics, fancy Italian landscaping, several fancy pools, chandeliers, and a double central staircase to rival anything in an English “pile” or Southern plantation mansion. Wonder what happened to it, too.

I was living in Pensacola on Escambia Bay as a hurricane was approaching. I went out to check the back yard and saw my neighbor walking under his dock with a can of bright day-glo pink in each hand. As I watched, he was painting a line on the underside of each plank in his dock assembly.

After the storm hit and his dock was washed away, he and I walk along the beach for about a mile and found every single one of his dock planks.

Not a bad trick. )))

In 1989 Hurricane Hugo destroyed the only bridge connecting Sullivans Island and the Isle of Palms to the mainland. The bridge was out of service for months afterwards. The US Army stepped up and operated a 24 hour ferry service until the bridge was reopened. I suspect something similar will happen at Sandibel Island.
