We don’t do corn. Too many disappointments around here. The extension office discourages planting corn in our county too—for the same reason.
This storm definitely has my attention.
I have a giant tree in my backyard, and one of the first things I’m going to do when I get my next job is to get it topped out. Tree services are expensive in the panhandle, so I don’t think I can get it completely cut down, but I can have them cut out the crown and just leave a length of trunk, like my neighbor did with a couple of hers. The tree is deeply rooted, so without the crown, the tree won’t get dragged down by the “sail effect” of high winds.

LOL. My dad’s name was Herbert but most called him by his nickname. A friend of ours mother was Cajun and was out here visiting. She kept calling dad hey bear much to my 10 year old confusion.
I am charged more for topping or trimming a tree than for having it cut at the base. Stump grinding adds a hefty charge.

Oh, dear. I’ll keep that in mind when I’m talking to the tree company. I’m not going to worry about grinding the stump in any case. I had an old silver maple taken down at my old house in Maryland after my Mother passed, and when they ground the stump down, there were all sorts of small objects flying through the air hitting my house.
So the stump can just sit there, as far as I’m concerned.
We’ve been planning for my brother’s memorial Oct. 1 in G’ville. He died a year ago (SARS- CoV-2), and it was only in May of this year that the rest of my family stopped worrying about family gatherings. Well, they still worry some, but now are ready to take the chance of being together.
Another option is to leave the stump a few feet above ground. You can use the tree stump as a table, a shelf for potted plants or even a chair with an umbrella.
