Once China invades and occupies the island, it’s over for the residents of Taiwan.

The deployment of Chinese forces must be met at sea before reaching the island. Biden will neither respond at sea in time nor with sufficient airborne strength to turn back an occupying force.

The GOP will take the House, but not the Senate. Biden will blame the GOP controlled House for not funding a force to liberate Taiwan. Biden will reach an agreement with the CCP to protect the residents of Taiwan while guaranteeing chip supply to the US.

Taiwan’s fall will be blamed on the GOP. Biden will be praised for reaching agreement to protect the rights of Taiwanese.

I would like to hear more of the 60’s timeframe you mention.

Red China exploded it's first atomic device in 1964. As far as we know, Taiwan does not have nuclear weapons.

They don’t need LSTs. They’ve modified Hundreds of large commercial freighters for dual use commerce and invasion transports. Been going on decades.

I don’t know where you have been, but China has TONS of Blue Water platforms and they are about to deploy their second full sized Carriers (not a crappy Russian retread). This isn’t the 1980’s any more.They’ve also been modifying large numbers of commercial freighters to act as Troop Transports for the last 15 years. Taiwan is only 1300 miles from port-to-port and China has regional missile and submarine superiority sufficient to do it, and Xi knows it.

If the Chinese “take over” Taiwan, it will be with the approval of the people of the island.

The logistics of an invasion are beyond the capabilities of all parties. Folks talk about the straits as if China would be crossing the Delaware River. It’s a lot of open ocean.

A modest amount of research will allay the fear of an “invasion.”

I don’t think the Reds would consider using tactical nuclear weapons in an attempt to seize Taiwan. The damage to the economic infrastructure plus looking to the world like evil bullies isn’t worth it.

I think the communists will settle for the status quo for the foreseeable future.

Like Israel, it would not be surprising if Taiwan had atomic weapons with the quiet acquiescence of the Reagan and Bush administrations. The Taiwan government may have their version of a “Samson option”, where they will take down their enemies in a suicide mission. Xi likely knows this and will probably use a naval blockade and other forms of economic pressure on Taiwan. Besides, the struggles Russia is having in connection with Ukraine, now compounded by struggles between former Soviet republics, has likely discouraged warharks in CCP ranks. Before the Communist conquest of China, the country was divided into warring factions. A major stumble in a war with Taiwan could lead to internal chaos within Red China

Recent Chinese words on this don’t indicate invasion to me

I view China as more a political and economic threat at this point

Maybe, but if they want to TAKE the island the PLAN will blockake it first and introduce a novel corona like virus to the island which will further justify the blockade!!! The ChiComs will have a vaccine ready to save Taiwan as soon as they capitulate. Bio warfare works, we all get it now.

Why would China waste resources invading Taiwan when politicians are so inexpensive to buy? The Taiwanese legislature has just as many McConnells and Grahams as ours, and their billionaire caste are eager to take advantage of the new opportunities to sell into China that will emerge if the island's politicians are convinced to act in a sufficiently "cooperative" manner.

The people of Taiwan don't want it, of course, but young globalist leadership is not long on sensitivity to public opinion.
