Germany Military Must Become Europe's 'Best Equipped': Scholz

ermany is ready to take a leading role in ensuring Europe's security, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Friday, vowing to transform the country's military into the "best equipped" on the continent.

Branding Vladimir Putin's Russia the "biggest threat" to NATO, Scholz said Europe had to be prepared to face up to the challenge.

"We are making it convincingly clear: Germany is ready to take on leading responsibility for the security of our continent," he told an army congress.

"As the most populous country with the greatest economic power and as a country in the middle of the continent, our army must become the cornerstone of conventional defence in Europe, the best equipped force in Europe."

Haunted by two world wars, Germany has always trod lightly and quietly on the world stage when it came to conflicts and military matters.

Scholz said the German army had for too long taken on roles such as "drilling wells, ensuring humanitarian help, stemming floods, also helping with vaccinations during the pandemic".

After what was told and done it won’t be very prudent for Putin to allow the return of business as usual.

Germans produce great engineers. The ones who industrialised the mass murder of millions of Jews were particularly good at

Sorry, but I’m afraid I cannot subscribe to this point of view.

Yes, the EU is very favorable to big business, maybe. However, how are we supposed to know when the alternative, a Free Trade Zone, might have been, an arrangement which many would have preferred, was never instituted?

And another matter: in 1989, the Euro was forced upon us by the French, whose president Mitterand threatened to attack us, he even announced a rerun of the Triple Entente if we didn’t comply?

With “friends” like these, who needs enemies?

Okay, and maybe all of us Americans whose families who have been here for 300 years or more should roll over and die, because we caused the mass extinction of the Native Americans.

What about the millions and millions dead by Communism in China, Stalin’s Russia, and Cambodia?

Sorry, yes, I meant “to understand”.

I thought “to understand” and “to relate to” were more or less synonyms :-)

Please forgive my terrible English - it’s my third language, after all :-)

Mitterand was a chihuahua. That’s not how it went down, as far as I could see. The British would have looked at him like something that crawled from under a rock. The Americans (GHW Bush) would have looked at him down that Bush nose and commented on the canapés.

You are looking at the stakes in your American tribal war. It is the American volk vs its elites. This is not a global tribal war, For the most part its really just you. I wish you luck.

One of the biggest historical mistakes in history was allowing a nation that started 2 world wars to exist. It should have been destroyed for good as a nation state. Europe will rue the day that the German army gets off the leash

Germany did not "start" two world wars. Many nations were equally guilty for the first. And Germany wasn't even solely responsible for the second, which was an outgrowth of the first.

Deutschland über alles...

If Germany refuses to rearm, it's called a parasite for sponging off of American funded NATO.

If Germany does rearm, it's called dangerously militaristic.

Often by the same haters, I suspect.

German net contribution to the EU is ~0.4% of their GDP. You grotesquely overstate the importance of that small burden. In return Germany gets much more out of the membership than that tiny amount.

Agreed. And as I indicated previously imho, that energy relationship Russia had with most of Europe will never be the same again.

Most of Europe has basically blown its own feet off not with a shotgun, but with a cannon. Check this:

‘Moscow unveils details of new gas pipeline to China’
https://www.rt.com/business/562882-russia-china-gas-pipeline/

That pipeline would deliver roughly 50+ billion cubic meters of natural gas annually. Nord Stream 1 delivered roughly 55 billion cubic meters....

Hmmmmmm!

Given that just here recently, a US official just came out and acknowledged that the sanctions against Russia have failed, perhaps Germany, as with most of Europe, needs to remove being stuck on stupid and stop being the stooges and lackeys to the US/NATO!?

Yes, Germany was the first to offer aid to a city under water. I know. The place was like a black sea for 3 weeks. The Dutch came in to engineer to keep the water out, but in Holland the water comes in only one way through the dam, and the population is a lot less. Now other places flood in Louisiana such as Braithwaite because the water has to go somewhere.

Yep they are going to up the number of working tanks in their inventory from 2 to 5!

Else they will have to cut even more social benefits and work a 35 hour week instead of 30, while cutting paid yearly vacations from 1 month to 2 weeks. Astounding!
