I take the Amtrak Cascades from Salem, OR to Seattle, return on the Coast Starlight. Much more pleasant at my age than driving I-5. The train is nearly always quite full. In fact, Business class was sold out last time I rode (early June).
The line that used to go across the south, from CA to FL, I think, stopped with Katrina. Never came back.
