I wouldn’t have a problem with standing for ‘God Save the King’, out of respect, either. I wouldn’t put my hand over my heart (but hardly anybody here seems to do that anymore, anyway, do they?)

That seems to be the protocol for events where multiple national anthems are played, such as the Scots Fest in Costa Mesa, Calif., a celebration of Scottish culture. The ceremony begins with the national anthems of the UK, Scotland and Canada, with "The Star-Spangled Banner" played last. We stand in respect for the foreign anthems but place our hats over our hearts for our own.

The US flag should not be lowered for a non citizen. (Or a black Hollywood singer)

Our “special relationship” with the UK, which began, arguably, with Theodore Roosevelt, hasn’t always worked well, but when it came to NATO, the British were solid parners. They even allowed us to base bombers, missiles and nuclear submarines in Britain. The “special relationship” reached its apogee under Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, when the two countries worked together on issues such as the Falkland Islands, Grenada and Pershing II missile deployments.

My flag with 50 stars is in storage. I fly a variety of Revolution era flags.

Seen a pickup at the local high school with 3 off the back tailgate today...gives me hope that not all the “yutes” have been brain-fornicated by the Bolshevik gruel they’re being force-fed daily.

You can find it said online that the queen ordered British flags to fly at half-mast and the bells at Westminster to toll when John Kennedy was assassinated.

The same thing happened in other West European countries (Holland, West Germany).

You didn’t suggest a ‘greater ally’.

Life is complicated, and so is Statecraft. Nations have their own interests to be concerned about even as they have allies.

Some people can’t seem to deal with that complexity...

Nations don’t have friends, only interests.

I don’t care what they do in England. That’s up to them. We can be gracious without thinking our sovereignty is at risk.

Yesterday our choir stood shoulder to shoulder with a choir from the UK and sang God Save the King. I don’t feel any less patriotic this morning.

I have to differ with you. Nations are made up of individuals, and they have feelings, memories of meaningful experiences, and *ideals* that they share with other human beings all over the world.

Every nation has ‘spook’ organizations, and every one of those is infested with some nasty, politicized individuals. We have our own, and some among them have been after President Trump from the beginning.

I’m not aware of Trump being able to do much about that or rid himself of them - and yet you blame a head of state with far less political power, and an entire nation of individuals, for what theirs did?

I think you are very opinionated, but I don’t think you’re very thoughtful.

I’m not singling anyone out in particular here. I admired the Queen, I am just stating how things work in the real world.

Alliances are temporary things, and they can change over time. Saying another nation is a “friend” implies that they will always be your friend. Cuba was our “friend” until 1959.

I’m certainly not discussing totalitarian states, where the individual - except for the tyrant leader - is meaningless.

Some alliances are deeper than others. In most instances, an alliance is a pure business relationship with no real affection either side, on coinciding mutual interest. Between the UK and US there are deep cultural, personal, economic and political ties that form an emotional bond between our two countries that goes beyond the alliance between the US and say, South Korea.

“half mast for Bidens cat.”

In my house, Lilly, Darth-Ann, and Maris Crane are comfortable with that.
