Lived in the area for 20 years. My home was about 3 miles from the epicenter of the 1989 Loma Prieta Quake. Now that was a quake!(6.9):

Like “thecodont” said “door slammer” at 2.9.

Yep, that was a quake! I was at work in Milpitas, watching the main corridor twist and ripple on my way to opening the door to fab and telling my Vietnamese techs ‘Deedee! Deedee!’ (Vietnamese for get out get out!).

I don’t speak any Vietnamese.

My techs looked at me very strangely for weeks afterwards...

Loma Prieta was the “World Series Quake,” right?

That one looked like a real mofo, (from afar) even messing up the Bay Bridge, if I remember right?

What I remember about the Loma Prieta was how long it went on. Most earthquakes I’ve experienced were just a passing jolt. That one had the whole house rolling like it was riding waves on the ocean. Seemed to go on forever, too.
