Are they still on “Special Duty”?
It sounds like they are losing a wartime bonus as opposed to a cut in their base salary.
I don’t know what they get paid, and it’s probably too low, but we shouldn’t continue a wartime bonus if we are not at war. We should instead increase the base if it’s not at an appropriate level.

When I read the article, it did not appear to describe wartime bonuses.

These aren't wartime boni. These are extra pays for special or hazardous or difficult duties. Stuff like combat controllers or pararescue - they have to play like they're in the Army, and that's terrible! Extra pay. ATC and TACP - difficult stuff that's very delicate and can easily get people killed if you mess something up - Extra pay. Basic training instructors - Something like 12 hours a day, 6-7 days a week, for two months at a time. (For Army, I dunno how much easier AF basic is for the drill sergeants.) No OT pay, but get an extra $75 a month!
Not sure why recruiters get the bonus pay though, that's a pretty cush job...?
