Editorial: California should go bolder on climate, even if it’s an 11th-hour push
The Los Angeles Times ^ | August 21, 2022 | BY THE TIMES EDITORIAL BOARD

California may be known as a climate leader, but when it comes to legislation to cut pollution and phase out fossil fuels, state lawmakers are largely resting on their laurels.

The state’s greenhouse gas reduction goals, once heralded as pioneering and ambitious, now lag other states and countries. California isn’t on track to meet even those outdated targets. And it’s been years since lawmakers have enacted major climate legislation on par with the landmark SB 32 in 2016.

Setting a legal requirement to slash climate emissions by 55% by 2030 would help reestablish California as a global climate leader, in line with the ambitions of the European Union. Lawmakers can also do better than Newsom’s proposal for 3,200-foot drilling setbacks, which bans only new wells, and require a phaseout of existing oil and gas operations near homes and schools.

Lawmakers need to take advantage of this rare opportunity and adopt the big, bold measures the governor has laid out. There might not be another chance to avert climate catastrophe and reduce suffering today and for future generations.

The ship of fools has run aground, and Blamed it on the climate The captain clapped the cat in irons And made it bite the first mate The ship would sink because the hole Is growing by the minute But now that it has run aground It's safe to walk the plank and drown Because the tide is out, and so The ship can float despite the hole.

Self-extinction by ideological fanatics.

It’s happened many times in history.

Are they going to buy even more power from AZ’s nuclear plant?

One way they could go bolder is by building desalinization plants instead of pumping water out of the lakes and rivers and the ground.

Ultimately the problem is too many people. Therefore for the forward thinking people of California I have a modest proposal. Voluntary Suicide Sites. Californians will be encouraged to go to a VSS and do their part in alleviating the climate crisis. If not enough people choose to go, the next step will be Enforced Suicide Sites, or ESS. As a bonus, the remains can be used as food to feed those in charge. This proposal should be implemented Swiftly.

Damn. Line breaks disappear.

The ship of fools has run aground, and
Blamed it on the climate
The captain clapped the cat in irons
And made it bite the first mate.
The ship would sink because the hole
Is growing by the minute.
But now that it has run aground
It’s safe to walk the plank and drown
Because the tide is out, and so
The ship can float despite the hole.

I remember the Good Old Days when the Communist Labor Terrorists would blow up the Los Angeles Times with dynamite bombs.

Now the Los Angeles Times ARE the Communist Environmental Terrorists.

There you go California. Double down on stupid while the the tax payers vote with their feet to get the heck away from you.

/\

It’s a high probability that the only ones still left in California are it’s citizens who have been taxed, fee’ed, fined and smog certed into such crushing debt and poverty that they can’t afford the gas to escape the state. Your incoming homeless are probably that category of Californians.

--- "California should go bolder on climate, even if it's an 11th-hour push"

Rather than snipe and complain and ridicule and such, I propose an action which would be so profound and visible that we may all learn by example.

The Los Angeles Times staff, top to bottom, could begin by eschewing cars in favor of bicycles, the City of Los Angeles' employees and elected officials could mothball their gasoline and diesel fueled vehicles in favor of walking, and the State of California's babbling Democrats could all avoid any burning of "fossil fuels" as they travel to and from the constituencies.

What better than an open and easily seen example of their commitment to being "bolder on climate?"

The only votes the machines register are the machine votes . when all human citizens have been driven from the state , the machines will start voting machines into office.

Utopia will at last be reached in giafornia.

"There might not be another chance to avert climate catastrophe and reduce suffering today"

I'm suffering in these 90 degree days. If only the world was still the Garden of Eden where every day was a balmy 74 degrees with pleasant winds wafting through the date palms. Man sure screwed it up.

Does anybody know of a single person "suffering today" from so-called "climate change"?

Yeah, those same EU countries that are restarting their coal plants and scrambling to get natural gas. Ask them how their windmills and solar cells worked for them.

climate leader??

They ban lumber mills and stopping brush clearing. Ok with large brush fires that kill many and destroy thousands of homes while releasing all that smoke.
They advocate banning existing oil and gas drilling in Los Angeles and all new in the state, water restrictions, destroying farming, high gas prices, high car prices, high electric rates.
Example: 6.3 cents in Tennessee while 20 to 30 cents and climbing in California and the democrats want it even higher!

The news media in this area are parrots for the democrats.

Electric companies should take the lead in saving the planet by disconnecting the electrical service at the homes of the entire LA Times editorial staff, then every politician that votes to end fossil fuel usage.
