The Russians clearly did not think Ukraine would ever attempt to attack Crimea. I am sure there are thousands of locals and even more Russians who figured it was as safe as going to Cape Cod.

That’s why the Russians had to be TOLD to leave. Told even by the children, “Mama we have to leave from here.”
Given the attack is irrelevant to the war at this point, Russia has shown restraint in retaliating. I wouldn't bet on that being the case if it happens again.
