“There is not use for draftees in the modern army - draftees only serve 2 years not long enough to finish many military training schools. For instance, language school may take 6 months alone. The there are the other technical schools that add to the MOS. By the time a draftee is ready to be deployed, he may have only 6 months of enlistment remaining.”

My battery test scores in 1960 were high enough that I was offered any training school offered by the Navy, including nuclear. ...The catch was I had to extend my 2-year active commitment by the length of the school course.
Being an 18-yr. old (only 2 months earlier), I wasn’t ready to agree to more active-duty time. I had joined the Naval Air Reserves a year before in my Sr. year of HS.
Seems from earlier posts that the military changed and allowed training schools to “eat up” active-duty time.
