Poll: Lisa Murkowski Underwater with Alaska GOP Voters as Primary Nears

Establishment Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) is underwater with Alaskan Republican voters, according to a Monday Morning Consult poll.

Only 41 percent approved of Murkowski’s job performance, while 46 percent disapproved.

The polling comes as Murkowski, who is supported by Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), hopes to defeat Donald Trump-endorsed Kelly Tshibaka in the August 16 Republican primary. In March polling, Murkowski trailed Tshibaka (45.4 to 28.7 percent).

Murkowski’s campaign has been flooded with donations from large political action groups. Murkowski ended the second quarter with $6.1 million in her campaign account with a second quarter raise of $1.7 million. In contrast, Tshibaka has $1.1 million on hand and raised about $585,000 last quarter. Tshibaka’s campaign has raised a total $3.1 million.

McConnell, an ardent defender of the established order in Washington, DC, is one reason Murkowski has fundraised better than Tshibaka. “It’s important for Lisa to be reelected. She’s one of the few sort of moderates in the middle of the Senate,” McConnell said of his colleague in April. “We’re going to do everything we can to make sure she’s successful.”

But the pressure on Murkowski is mounting after she backed many Democrat priorities in the Senate, including implementing gun control, confirming Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, attempting to impeach former President Donald Trump, and helping President Biden pass massive spending bills.

That was Joe Miller. She won as a Republican write-in candidate (2010). The way the Alaska law was at the time, a candidate who lost their primary could run as a write-in, and write-in candidates in Alaska could still claim a party.

But this time around, there is no party primary at all, so she no longer even needs to throw crumbs to the base. There is a jungle primary of all candidates and the top 4 go on to the general election. Then, there is now also ranked-choice voting. Murkwoski is very much still in the hunt - virtually no one could vote for her as their first choice and she could still win.

There is no "Republican Primary" - it is unfortunate that even all this time later it is still being reported like this and causing confusion. This can only help Murkowski come the general election.

“ She lost in the primary before and then won as an independent.”
Then the AK rep party threw their support behind her write in campaign (after she had pledged to support the party nominee). They cutoff the rightful repub nominee and the rest is history. I changed my party affiliation to independent after that.

Any person with sense would have done so - you have noticed the string of Supreme Court rulings that would have *all* gone in the opposite direction, right, if you had had your way? What would the Republic look like now after 6 years of far left opinions on every case?

Live in the real world, not an imaginary one. The real world is not always ideal...but it is the real one we have to deal with.

Complete fiction - never happened. Miller had full support and would have had virtually no campaign but for the orgs of the party backing him. Had a full media campaign supporting him.

This BS ranked choice voting is designed for squishes to win. She will have enough weak-minded morons on the right, to combine with squishy leftists to win.
Kelly Tshibaka is awesome, but it’s gonna take a miracle for her to win.

A bad showing in the primary would send the message she should quit but she won’t.

Murkowski is a moderate Democrat, just like Mitch.

Well, I am happy with it, but I would be prouder of myself if I had gotten both pics to appear as the same size. It's something to work on for next time.

Just how much influence does Mitch McConnell have with Republican primary voters as compared to President Trump? Close to none. However, McConnell has needed to suck up to RINO's in the US Senate so they vote with him in the US Senate.

Nope.
Not when she's running against the might of President Trump, she won't.

She lost in the primary before and then won as an independent.

She wasn't running against a pissed off President Trump then. She is now. Totally different situation altogether.

She needs to go. I gave her the benefit of the doubt in 2004, but voted for someone else in 2010 and 2016 and I’ll vote for someone else in 2022.

Look for Democrats to vote in the Republican primary for her.
