WASHINGTON (AP) — The monarch butterfly fluttered a step closer to extinction Thursday, as scientists put the iconic orange-and-black insect on the endangered list because of its fast dwindling numbers.
“It’s just a devastating decline,” said Stuart Pimm, an ecologist at Duke University who was not involved in the new listing. “This is one of the most recognizable butterflies in the world.”
The International Union for the Conservation of Nature added the migrating monarch butterfly for the first time to its “red list” of threatened species and categorized it as “endangered” — two steps from extinct.

Audit the surveys that were used to designate their status.
Pay particular attention to the acreage numbers.
Have the suitable habitat acre numbers been switched with total acres number thus taking a 100 % habitat saturation and turning it into an endangered habitat ?
I saw this bait and switch for the spotted owl at the BLM Clackamas resource area spotted owl survey that I personally participated in.
The wildlife biologist I questioned on this admitted to the switch fraud. “ Its for the greater good “.

I am seeing more monarchs earlier this year. Doesn’t mean they aren’t endangered, but they had a good winter.
Many fewer butterflies of the non-migratory kind, however. Fewer swalllowtails, skippers, anglewings, checkerspots, blues, mourning cloaks, purples, sulphurs, even the cabbage whites. No spangled fritillaries at all. My yard hasn’t changed, there is no new development within a mile.
Something is happening. Bees look okay, though. But toxin engineered in the corn?
So, we’re supposed to eat insects... but not Monarch butterflies... got it.

My daughter is an early childhood educator and she has made it her mission to collect and “breed” as many monarchs as she can. The kids love watching their progress and release.

Free Republic..the place of independent reporting. I live 12 miles from the winter hibernating sanctuary in Central Mexico. Don’t blame it all please on global warming and pesticides. You might want to factor in the horrendous devastating harvesting of the trees in the mountains of Mexico that got the Chain Saw at their roots. Piles and piles of logs..waiting to be hauled off to market. It really has been a political hot potato, as locals strive to keep the area forested full of vim and vigor..it is NOT just climate change.
Good explanation. Habitat loss is the reason most plants and animals are going extinct, not global warming.
It looks like their winter home is occupied by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, so there might not be much the Mexican government can do conservation wise.
No, it and other insects are declining because of Geo-Engineering spraying poisonous metals and chemicals into the atmosphere. Like the current heat wave caused by spraying to cause heat domes over the Southwest and Midwest.
This is my 4th yr having a Monarch Butterfly Garden (3’x30’) with about 30 swamp milkweed plants in Westport, Ma. This is the earliest I’ve seen them (mid-June) and there are always a few in my garden all day. My unprofessional opinion is they are still travelin North and will start laying their 4th generation eggs in about a month. Those will be the ones that will fly all the way back to Mexico. I think the Midwest has seen the biggest decline ‘cuz of milkweed being eradicated for agricultural purposes. Amazing insect.
Time for some mad scientist to genetically engineer Roundup resistant milkweed like they do with corn and soybeans.

Monarchs have an amazing migration pattern. They emerge from Mexico and come up through North America, breed lay eggs and die. Offspring will spend a generation or 2 up here and then migrate back to Mexico.
Bee keepers will tell you there is still a problem.
The whole conservation movement has been hijacked by the cabal and their agents. Green Peace was one of the first sell outs. Most of those people amd groups like them know little or nothing about nature.
I haven’t seen many butterflies or honey bees. Could 5G be the culprit?
