The whitish “stars” in the foreground that lack the distinctive star-shaped diffraction patterns are actually galaxies 4 billion LY away, and they are the benders.

The real image is invisible to the human eye, so has been mathematically processed. You'd think it would be trivial to also process out the very annoying support strut patterns.

Good question...The article states the pic shows a galaxy cluster as it appeared 4.6 billion years ago. Light travels ≅ 186,282 mi/sec.; so, 31,557,600 sec/yr X 4.600,000,000 yrs X 186,282 mi/sec ≅ 2.7 with 25 zeros behind it miles. Or 27 septillion miles away is my guess-— Corrections welcome; I'm tired.

I think this is a jaw-dropping picture, especially when you consider, as the article states, that the field of view is equivalent to a grain of sand held up to the night sky at arm’s length. There’s a ton to absorb in that photo.

The one downside of the Webb telescope is the starbursts caused around bright stars by diffraction from the multiple hexagonal mirrors. While I’m sure they don’t significantly affect scientific value, they obscure some of the details when just viewing the photos. Hubble had them too, as do all telescopes, but in the case of Hubble there were only four spikes.

Thanks...That speaks volumes when I think of what astronomers can do with gathered light.

Thanks...I searched “Webb”, not “JWST”, before posting.

Makes you feel pretty insignificant when you realize all those little smudges are galaxies.

Maybe my problems aren’t that big after all.

Notice how some red galaxies are not even visible in the Hubble picture? Those must be the highly red shifted ones only visible in far infrared.

They could rotate the Telescope slightly and take another picture. Anything that is not in both pictures is a spike and could be subtracted.

NASA choose an unimpressive first image.

Agreed. Very underwhelming. Nothing like the first images after Hubble got glasses.
