He was a conservative nationalist. He wanted to expand the Japanese military because of North Korean and Chinese aggression. He was also pushing to defend Taiwan against China because he knew if Taiwan falls, China could focus on other local nations, such as Japan. He was just looking at the overall Asian situation and being realistic.
China needed Abe gone before they invaded Taiwan.
