The Democrats split over the Vietnam War and LBJ's guns and butter policy so he could fund both the War and his Great Society nonsense. The liberal McGovern/Kennedy wing of the party seized control between 1968 and 1972. That's when conservative Southerners started to vote Republican.
Yeah, they probably have no clue that ain’t the proper word. Even though it sounds it. Toss doffing at them. π
Perfect
Technically, the Dixiecrats split off to form a third party that only lasted one election. Then they “returned” to the Democrats. The only outstanding issue between them was segregation.
That is not true.
I live in Georgia.
Governor Sonny Perdue, in office January 13, 2003, was the first Republican to hold the office since the Reconstruction era.
Senator Mack Mattingly, in office January 3, 1981 was the first Republican to hold the office since the Reconstruction era.
Congressman Bo Callaway, in office January 3, 1965 β January 3, 1967, was initially a Democrat and a supporter of racial segregation, he was the first Republican elected to Congress in Georgia since Reconstruction Era and served one term.>
There were five more Republicans in Congress on an individual basis serving as the sole Republican (including Newt Gingrich) with all the rest Democrats until 1993 when more Republicans began winning elections.
The same pattern occurred all across the South with Republicans not winning a significant number of elections until the beginning of the 21 Century.
And note that Newt was born in Pennsylvania and lived as a military brat in Europe and Pennsylvania until his family settled in Georgia during his junior year in HS.
The subject of the "party switch" story has come up at dinner several times in recent weeks (since daughter home from college). Both have been looking for how to understand it. You have explained it so well! Thanks again!
That’s a great post, bookmarked.
How racist of me to point it out.
