Why would a father approve a gun for his 19 year old that has already said he wanted to commit suicide?

Denial and poor judgement.

I wouldn't know since I've never had a son that I loved above all things else.........

Since I've never been married or had any children, I have no idea on how children should be raised or what so called "flags" should be observed and acted upon.......

Glad to know that this site is filled with experts on parenting and could have easily prevented this tragedy if they were his parents........

He wanted/threatened to kill his parents too. So Dad aided and abetted a suicidal, homicidal loon by helping him buy a gun. Dad’s complicit in the murders.

It was unclear if he was living with his mom or dad or in the separate house out back of his dad’s in early 2019 when he threatened suicide and psychologists treated him. Still don’t know when they divorced. Or did they? Was there a custody battle for the kids? We’re they even married? If he was living with his mom that may have been kept quiet between her and the psychologist/s? Or Dad did know and maybe didn’t believe the kid was seriously suicidal, or thought the kid was in more danger driving around by himself to work and such from Chicago area crime than he was to himself. Were there riots in that small town in 2019? I think the guy was still employed in 2019. The second call to the police was in Sept 2019, late in the year. Dad might have already signed for him by then. Evidently no more issues after that with law enforcement , so the kid was able to renew it by himself when he turned 21. Maybe they should require a drug test.

The father may be committed of a crime by filing a fraudulent background check for his son’s gun.

OTOH, the two are certainly going to be sued thru civil court. What insurance they have is another issue, and even then the insurance company won’t cover it.

Leaving the victims with nothing.
