Manhattan New York is a dump and a socialist mecca. The residents accept behavior and filth that others would never tolerate. Residents blind themselves to the shabbiness, the mentally ill, overcrowding, the minuscule apartments, insane prices, and lack of selection in stores.
The sidewalks were too narrow over a century ago and a trip through the subways is a journey through a sewer line. The streets are a pot-holed mess.
The rivers are polluted with human waste among other things. It's hot and muggy in the summers, really bringing out the smell of urine, garbage, and body odor. The stench of the Great Unwashed permeates everything. It's cold in the winters and rainy in the spring. You have to leave the city and go upstate in the fall to see the leaves change.
The locals look like something that the cat coughed up. Anyone half-decent looking is a tourist, a student, a working commuter, or a recent arrival. Those who stay too long adopt the look and attire of a style that ranges from "desperate-for-stand-out" to "I call it trending retro but it's really second-secondhand". Their look is that of resignation.
