Naomi Wolf calls herself a feminist, but she has nothing in common with today’s Feminazis. She’s appears quite sane.
Good essay.
She makes some good points. Thanks for posting.
There is only one reason the left is delegitimizing the court. It's 5-4 against them.
How did Wolf, once a big fan girl of Fat Albert Gore, suddenly appear on the right?
6-3 was to uphold the Mississippi laws. 5-4 was overturning Roe.
Thanks. Wasn’t aware there were 2 votes.
There were two different parts to the ruling. Roberts sided with the other 5 conservative justices on upholding Georgia’s restrictions on abortions, so that part of the decision was 6-3. Roberts sided with the liberal justices against striking down Roe, so that part of the decision was 5-4.
I skimmed the rest after the author says they are pro choice. Whatev lady.
Well, you'd be wrong. All 3,975 words wrong (Geebus.)
4 words: ultrasound and preemie viabilty.
That's all.
Killing babies is cool.
Most Americans support abortion in the first trimester as well as parental notification for minors. So in this sense, most Americans are pro choice. After the first trimester, popular support falls considerably.
But where the Left lost people was in their "shout your abortion!" nonsense as well as demanding that there be zero restrictions on abortion for any reason and minors should be able to have abortions without telling their parents.
Finally, while most Americans may support first trimester abortion, they find the subject ugly and not something they want to think about. Certainly nothing to celebrate or bake a cake over.
A majority of Americans support abortion in the first trimester, including many Republicans.
For the last 49 years, Roe has been a useful foil for GOP lawmakers (and many GOP voters) in that it allowed them to draft and support extreme pro-life laws that had no chance of surviving in the court.
Now that Roe is history, GOP lawmakers are going to have to grapple with a reality they hadn't had to face before. Do they draft strict anti-abortion laws to appeal to their base, laws that could turn off large numbers of voters and could result in election defeats?
Some current (R) governors like DeSantis and Youngkin are trying to thread this needle with 15-week abortion limits that are certain to anger their pro-life base but might be a little more palatable to moderates and independents.
Politics is always about winning and voters are going to have to make tough decisions. Do I support the candidate that represents my views 100% but will lose to the candidate who represents 0% of my views or do I find someone in the middle and get 50% of what I want?
I just haven’t seen any evidence they’ve lost people.
And even if they did it didn’t have any effect on this ruling.
I think people like Wolf are using this narrative because it supports their personal positions, not because SCOTUS was responding to popular opinion.
Without a doubt Dobbs was not a response to popular opinion.
Of course, most Americans think that without RvW, abortion would be illegal. Indeed, a great many of Americans today believe that abortion in the United States became illegal last Friday.
You pulled that out of your a$$. So I call BS.
That picture is why we need to repeal the 19th amendment.
I understand. I also believe Americans have been conditioned to accept abortion as somewhat normal over the last 50 years. It doesn’t have to happen but people, men and women (whatever they are?) are selfish. They don’t care that they are taking a life. They use it as birth control. Guys don’t want to take care of some whore’s kid and women don’t want to go through pregnancy because their career, their body their convenience. It’s all about them.
I’m hoping the Roe reversal wakes people up to the fact that abortion is wrong and doesn’t have to happen.
Overturning Roeis only the first step. The second step to a total abortion ban will be much more difficult as it will require a massive change in hearts and minds.
Anyone thinking the Dobbs decision is the green light for Republicans to run with extreme abortion restrictions will likely be disappointed when these candidates lose elections. The country as a whole just isn’t there yet.
Agree 100%
Well, then: Therefore women cannot have basic equality or self-determination. A society which attempts to "give" such things to women is inherently a society dedicated to slaughtering innocent people. Even at that, baby killing any time for any reason has given women neither "basic equality" nor "self-determination". It has, however, turned a great many women into conscienceless killers and produced a bloodbath worse than the combined body-count of Hitler and Stalin.
Guess what? Women and men are not equal. Rejection of that simple truth has led us, finally, to genital mutilation of boys and girls, and a Supreme Court nominee who swore under oath that she(?) cannot define the word "woman".
