I have very complicated feelings about Donald Trump right now (pantywaist contemplates)

Trump didn’t simply tarnish the GOP brand in certain circles — that’s a very temporary thing, and Republicans of all stripes had done plenty to tarnish the brand on their own. Trump habituated Republicans and conservatives into conspiracy-theorizing, into lib-owning as the highest undertaking, and into defending corruption and abuse of power.

Yet Trump brought about the end of Roe. That is something every prior Republican decidedly couldn’t do or refused to do.

The majority in Roe included five Republican appointees. The majority in 1992 upholding Roe in Planned Parenthood v. Casey included five Republican appointees. Pro-life voters were told endlessly to elect Republican presidents and senators in order to overturn Roe, and again and again, after Souters and O'Connors and Kennedys, this proved folly. Even George W. Bush, the closest thing to a religious Right president, didn’t give us two reliable votes against Roe.

It took, of all people, Trump to give us a majority more wedded to the Constitution than to abortion.

No issue in politics is more important than abortion because no cause is more righteous than protecting innocent babies from slaughter. No president did more good on abortion than Trump. So this makes things complicated.

How is a pro-life conservative who is fully aware of Trump’s crippling vices and his lasting harms to feel today?

One relevant question is whether a different Republican nominee would have yielded as good results, Supreme Court-wise, in 2016 through 2020 as Trump did. First, would Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, John Kasich, or Ted Cruz have beaten Hillary? Maybe anybody with a pulse would have defeated that obviously corrupt, thoroughly unlikable, entirely opportunistic politician. Then again, maybe it took Trump's unique appeal to the working-class voter in order to carry Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin in 2016.

To fight horrible people, you need to bring in people who can do the fighting and they tend to be horrible too.

It is like Churchill in WWII. One needed a monster to stop another monster. Well, our federal government is a monster.

Age is something to consider for sure. I prefer someone
under the age of 65 when installed for the first term.

Trump Born: June 14, 1946 (age 76) Add a couple more
should he run and be elected.

Abortion is not just words..pro life or not.

Society has lost their minds to have let planned parenthood kill their babies.

A nurse quit her job some months ago. She couldn’t take it any more. Her job was to hold the screaming baby while they cut out parts of that little innocent body.. to sell.

Those people would save a dog and kill God’s creation.

One more item I want to address.. Trump before you knew him.
When he came down the escalator, I knew the man was a giver. He gave his plane to be used when a child here.. a child there..needed a fast trip to a hospital. He gave and gave...he cared..
He was a rich man. Sure of himself... he also was a kind man who did not think the world was about him.
He has a very high IQ and can do many equally important things at a time..
I could go on... he beats barry, George and biden.. in wanting to help and loving this nation.

Leftists and NeverTrumpers casually accuse him of abusing power. What power did he abuse? What did he do that was not scrupulously legal? The travel ban, enforcing immigration laws, the tariff on Chinese goods, withdrawing from the Paris agreement and the Iran deal all of that and more was entirely legal.

All these milquetoasts can truly say is he is crude....or he sends out mean tweets. pfffffft! I couldn’t care less. In the vast majority of cases its well deserved. Who gives a damn what the man says? Its all about what he does. Trump did a LOT of good for America when he was in office.

They have to get past Joe and hunter.. past barry.. the bushes.. before any of those left blind sheep can say a word against Trump.

My sakes... crime on their dealings.. child trafficking and more.
Take care of the horrible...and save our country from them and their hate.

Trump WON in a historic LANDSLIDE in 2020
———————————-
It was on him to prove it. He didn’t and it really messed things up, including Jan 6th. I am ready to move on to a different candidate.

Do you know the hate for Trump was on both sides, and both sides wanted him out.

In GA, the rep gov worked against Trump.

They lied.. they pulled every handle.. they would rather have a senile old man open the southern gates and start a war than to have a strong man . who they could not control.

When all the depts of the government are working against one man.. I don’t know how he withstood. But if we don’t win this one war.. there won’t be another chance.

I pretty much agree with you, but Congress only gets 50% of the blame not 100% as you seem to imply. The other 50% is the voter. The voter for the most part wants problems solved by an opportunity to get their snout or their pet cause’s snout into the taxpayer trough. Of course, they forget who gets first dibs at the trough the Congresscritter, his\her family, pals and supporters. The longer they stay in office the worse it is. The voter also has a tendency to want things solved by ‘magic’, social security is the best example.

What’s the answer? There’s no one answer or perfect answer. How do you solve in the electorate general inattentiveness, disinterest until almost election eve and general naivety not just about how government works but what it can actually do? Then there’s the actual ignorance about the basics of government, federal, state county and local. We’ve seen all the videos! Revolution wouldn’t solve it because at best we’d end up with same thing we have now at worst is too horrible to contemplate. Why would we end up with the same thing? Human nature & the business of personal life. The only solution is to roll back to what the Founders bequeathed us with some fine tuning like term limits. Roll back - Repeal the 17th Amendment.

1. Term limits - At least forces turn over in Congress, particularly needed in the Senate. Might force the professional politicians to go back to their respective states and districts to keep their careers going, maybe even get a private sector job. I say a decade for both Houses is enough (two terms - 12 years in the Senate & 5 terms - 10 years in the House)

2. Repeal the 17th Amendment - Return to the states a say in Federal policy as the Founders intended! Let the state legislature go back to selecting the state’s senators. Every state legislator will see herself\himself in that Senate chair. This might take care of Senate rotation in itself. I might suggest a fine tuning of allowing the governor the option to put the sitting senator up for review by the legislature after two years.

And yes, there are problems with these solutions. All actions have consequences, some small some large some unforeseen. I though think they are manageable!

Shorter version: Universal suffrage is a suicide pact.

I do agree that cutting power tends to cut the trouble and mischief. bad people gravitate to big government because that’s where the power and money is.

The Founders were very suspicious of too much democracy. Their (Non-classical) example of what it would lead too was Rhode Island.
