Adams should know that it was the Democrats that were in power at the time that land was confiscated. There isn’t one mention of it in the article. Democrat Horatio Seymour was NY State Governor from January 1st, 1853 to December 31, 1854. He had a second term as Governor from January 1, 1863 to December 31, 1864. Democrat Jacob Westervelt was Mayor of New York City from 1853 to 1855. He was followed by Democrat Fernando Wood who served one term from 1855 to 1858, and a second term from 1860 to 1862. The 76th New York State Legislature (January 4 to July 21, 1853), specifically the Assembly, was controlled by the Democrats (87-41). The Senate was split evenly 16-16. In the 77th State Legislature (January 3 to April 17, 1854), the Whigs controlled both chambers. I wasn’t able to determine the political make-up of the New York City Common Council for 1863, but if history tells us anything, it was most likely controlled by Democrats, but of course I can’t confirm this.

He was in Ghana, and the Ghanaians invited him to attend an exhibition decrying the terrible injustice perpetrated by African tribesmen on captured members of other, conquered African tribes, who sold them into slavery to Whites?!
