Woodward and Bernstein didn't bring down a president in Watergate – but the myth that they did lives on

In their dogged reporting of the Watergate scandal, Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein uncovered the crimes that forced Richard Nixon to resign the presidency in August 1974.

That version of Watergate has long dominated popular understanding of the scandal, which unfolded over 26 months beginning in June 1972. It is, however, a simplistic trope that not even Watergate-era principals at the Post embraced.

For example, the newspaper’s publisher during Watergate, Katharine Graham, pointedly rejected that interpretation during a program 25 years ago at the now-defunct Newseum in suburban Virginia.

“Sometimes, people accuse us of ‘bringing down a president,’ which of course we didn’t do, and shouldn’t have done,”Graham said. “The processes that caused [Nixon’s] resignation were constitutional.”

Nixon’s transgressions are like little white lies compared to the evil criminality of Obama, Biden, Pelosi, Schumer their cohorts and complicit media.

actually..it was when Nixon took out the Lefts favorite communist Alger Hiss...thats when the war between Nixon and the press started...as for Gahagan, even JFK hated her... secretly gave money to Nixons campaign to defeat her...guess Nixon and JFK were pretty good friends back in the day...

The purpose of the breakin was to see if there was a connection between Dean and the whore Maureen

Exactly....

Colodny did a tremendous service when he wrote Silent Coup... you can read it on the Amazon website and frankly, no one should be commenting on Watergate issues without first having read this. https://www.amazon.com/Silent-Coup-Len-Colodny/dp/1634240537/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=&asin=B015M9SQHM&revisionId=d0f831d5&format=1&depth=1

One of my favorite parts on the watergate.com website was when Colodny interviewed Woodward for the book... the audio of the interview is here...

Nixon was brought down by the FBI with help from the CIA. Sound familiar?

Beware the Deep State.

Nixon wasn’t as bad as people now seem to think.

But he brought HIMSELF down.

True. Even deceased, though, he would still be a better president than Joe.

So then, some politician's political operatives spied on the political opposition and engaged in political 'dirty tricks', 'rat-fuking', and in general all the normal things that every politician of every stripe has done since the dawn of civilization ... but Wood-Stein have made 'exposing' all this into a full blown lifelong career ??? Well, laa-di-daaa .... isn't that so precious of them.

What's completely lost on the populace général is that every politician is a corrupt screwball and potential wanna-be tyrant ... there is no altruism in politics.

“The purpose of the breakin was to see if there was a connection between Dean and the whore Maureen”

The two authors of Silent Coup concluded that John Dean alone was responsible for the Watergate break-ins.

Dean organized it while telling the “Plumbers” that it was Nixon’s idea.

Dean’s fiance Mo Biner was roommates with one of Xaviera “The Happy Hooker” Hollander’s call girls. Mo was also one of the call girls. Which is how John Dean met her.

The call girl service was run out of a desk in the DNC offices in the Watergate. The same desk where the Plumbers planted the bug. Dean had two goals. He wanted Mo Biner’s page removed from the call girl book that was in that desk, and he wanted to be able to spy on Democrats using the hooker service.

G Gordon Liddy was convinced that Colodny and Gettlin had discovered the secret of Watergate. Liddy said “I went to prison thinking I was protecting President Nixon. Instead I was protecting John Dean”.

You don’t think the anti-Nixonians had an agenda, Now do you? When Nixon defeated the Red Communist congressman, Jerry Voorhis, then representing the California 12th district in 1946, he moved into the target range of the CIO union goons.

In 1950, Nixon ran against Democrat incumbent Senator from California, Helen Gahagan Douglas, whom Nixon described as “pink (Communist sympathizer) right down to her underwear.”

This further sharpened the antagonism against Nixon, as the claim that Nixon had not “played fair” began to take hold in the imaginations of some. This did not diminish in the least when Dwight Eisenhower named Nixon his running mate in 1952, and swept into office after 20 years of the Democrat Presidencies.

Now most people know the rest of Nixon’s history, from the Kennedy capture of the presidency in 1960, and Nixon’s return in 1968, after LBJ’s spectacular crash and burn.

From that point on, Nixon was the ONLY target of the seething “liberal” progressives that have somehow never been put to rout since they came into power about the time of Teddy Roosevelt, and first occupied a niche within the Republican party. During and after the Great Depression, the Progressives pretended to be “Republicans”, but once the Second World War was over, they flocked en masse to the Democrat party, and for a while, assured the continued control of the Democrat delegation by progressive forces, forcing many of the old-line Southern Democrats (”Dixiecrats”) out altogether. A very few became Republican, like Strom Thurmond, but most simply retired, to be replaced by “New South” Republicans, much more attuned to Nixonian policies and free market economy.
