Kentucky congressman Thomas Massie back in Trump’s good graces

VANCEBURG, Ky. (WTVQ) – U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie is back in the good graces of Donald Trump, who declared two years ago that the Kentucky maverick should be thrown out of the Republican Party.

... In a statement, Trump referred to the libertarian-minded congressman as a “Conservative Warrior” and a “first-rate Defender of the Constitution.”

It’s quite a turnaround from March 2020, when Trump denounced Massie as a “third rate Grandstander” for trying to stall a sweeping $2.2 trillion coronavirus aid package.

While his maneuver failed, Massie’s action forced hundreds of lawmakers to return to the Capitol after a nearly two-week recess — contradicting the wishes of public health experts who were urging people to keep a safe social distance from one another to avoid exacerbating the pandemic.

At the time, Trump called Massie “a disaster for America, and for the Great State of Kentucky!” and urged GOP leaders to “throw Massie out of Republican Party!″

The pressure didn’t stop congressman from trying to hold up what he considered to be an unconstitutional vote for a wasteful bill. Massie — known for going his own way in Congress — said at the time that his request for a recorded vote was “to make sure our republic doesn’t die by unanimous consent in an empty chamber.″

Despite the public tongue-lashing from Trump, Massie went on to trounce his Republican primary challenger in 2020 on his way to reelection in the northern Kentucky district.

Good news that the #1 defender of the 2A in Congress has patched things up with Trump!

God Bless Donald Trump but also God Bless Thomas Massie.

Massie was right about wasteful COVID spending in 2020 here we are paying for it big time with inflation.

As I keep saying, every time I see Massie in the news, I just think he’s more awesome. Everything he says/does is OK by me so far.

Quite a flip flop. Massie’s principled stances remain unchanged.

Leadership should put him forward more often. They did on the gun debate and he now sits on the Judiciary committee which surprised me to learn. He is very articulate, smart, etc.

Massie is one of the very few in Congress whom I would retain.

Imagine.

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) and senator Thomas Massie (R-KY)

Yeah I can imagine. He’d need a lot of Freeper support though because he wouldn’t be McConnell’s choice.

Fascinated to see if he’ll go for it but it’s a way off yet.

Massie could replace Paul not the turtle. Paul may have bigger fish to fry.

As for the turtle there’s the young fella Cameron who’s on the fast track. I say go slow. You don’t want to blow it like Bevin did with the governorship. Might mean Paul should stay right where he is.

Depending on the person Trump gives the opportunity to repent and beg for forgiveness. But you only get one chance. Use it well.

Massie had nothing to repent for. Even won his re-election easily without the much coveted Trump endorsement.

“… Despite the public tongue-lashing from Trump, Massie went on to trounce his Republican primary challenger in 2020 on his way to reelection in the northern Kentucky district…”
********************************************************************

And I hope that, in a similar fashion, Mo Brooks goes on to win in his runoff election despite Trump’s endorsement of Mo’s McConnell camp opponent.

It’s a periodic character flaw of Trump that he goes off on his strongest allies for trivial reasons.

Good news. I’m glad Trump came around on Massie.

“It’s quite a turnaround from March 2020, when Trump denounced Massie as a “third rate Grandstander” for trying to stall a sweeping $2.2 trillion coronavirus aid package.”

And Massie was 100% correct in doing so. Him and Rand Paul are top notch, some of the few worthwhile Republicans. We would do well to have more like them.

Wasn’t speaking specifically about Massie but there are others.

I’m worried for Mo. Baffling to say the least that Trump abandoned him now we may have a hand picked McConnell RINO for 6 years or longer.

Trump was in the wrong on the Covid bill, not Massie. Trump had to face reality that people still like Massie.

I’m sorry, but what a load of bullshit. Trump has royally screwed up so many endorsements and personnel hires (Omarosa anyone?), and some are still trusting his people instincts. What a joke.
