I disagree. The victim seemed to be aware of the two thugs following closely, but I would conjecture that he didn’t want to come off as racist so he kinda aimlessly kept walking.

Yeah. Just before the punch, the victim half-turned towards the attackers and extended an arm. I wonder if he said something like, "Keep your distance."
