What could have lessened it would have been a competent law enforcement response....
BUT A LOCKED DOOR WOULD HAVE PREVENTED IT!
There is camera/AI technology that has been around for a while that can easily identify that a person is carrying a long arm. Such technology could have automatically locked the door if it was closed and pinged the proper people.
Putting that aside, the whole notion that hardening school buildings will save kids from lunatics is an absurd notion in the first place. Pretend that we eradicated firearms in the whole country and that nobody has them. That would not protect kids from devoids. There are still hammers, knives and cans of gasoline and with those no school building is needed, just one of the 500,000 plus school buses on the streets in the US every day. Evil will find a way.
