Ah, old memories. In 1996, sometime in the late stages of the campaign, I was over at the Dole campaign headquarters one evening, doing some volunteer work. Nothing fancy, just dialing for dollars. By this stage it was pretty clear that we were going to lose, but we were determined to go down fighting, and one can always hope for lightening striking.
Late in the evening, a message was passed around to everyone who was involved in any form of external contact. If we heard the name “Mark Middleton,” we were to take the contact information of the person we were talking to, drop whatever we were doing, and bring it straight upstairs to the inner sanctum. We were not told anything at all about what this was about and we were told not to make a big deal about it on the phone; just be alert for the name, get the contact info and bring it IMMEDIATELY upstairs.
I heard nothing more about it that night, or for some weeks to come. It was very odd at the time, but it seemed that nothing had come of it, and I forgot about it.
Later, however, a story very briefly flickered across a couple of media outlets. Mark Middleton was an old Clinton political volunteer from Arkansas, which is fine. He had been a fundraiser in the 1992 Clinton campaign and had scored a staff job in the White House when Clinton won. This too is fine, as long as he was qualified for his job. After a couple of years, he left the White House and hung out his shingle as an “international trade consultant,” presumably a glorified lobbyist, which is also fine as long as he was playing within the rules.
The problem was this. As an “international trade consultant,” Middleton was flying around Asia and actively fundraising for the 1996 Clinton campaign. (Note that American expats are perfectly entitled to contribute to U.S. political campaigns. Foreign nationals and businesses are not.) This was the period during which the Clinton-Gore campaign was up to its eyeballs in illegal foreign contributions. How much illegal money Middleton may have raised, I don’t know; the memorable twist of the Middleton story lies elsewhere.
In his “business” dealings, Middleton was handing out a business card that was a very close knockoff of an official White House staff card — one of those facially nearly identical fakes with a minute difference to give the lawyers something to quibble about if one got caught.
This business card identified Middleton as a “Special Assistant to the President,” which he no longer was.
AND THE CARD LISTED THE ACTUAL WHITE HOUSE TELEPHONE NUMBER.
Veteran freepers will recall BillyJeff’s famous sacking of the White House telephone operators and the installation of an automated system to screen incoming calls. The number on Middleton’s card rang into this automated system. The telephone tree took over: “If you are calling for President William Jefferson Clinton, press one. If you are calling for Vice President Al Gore, press two. If you are calling for Chief of Staff Mack McClarty, press three. If you are calling for Mark Middleton, press four....”
If you pressed four, the automated system kicked your call out of the White House and transferred you to a campaign office that was standing by to receive such calls.
If my memory serves, the telephone tree listed Middleton as #4. Pretty important guy. Must’ve impressed prospective donors.
The White House recorded message was changed and the Middleton number taken down the moment the story broke. Vanished. Down the memory hole. Someone got a recording before it was pulled down, and I heard that played ONCE before the media totally spiked the story. Janet Reno, of course, declined to investigate. The democrats on the FEC locked arms and refused to investigate. The news media couldn’t be bothered; the MSM was having fun with Monica Lewinsky but was otherwise doing its best to ignore the myriad Clinton scandals. Republicans squawked but got not traction; if BillyJeff murdered ten children in the Oval Office and the MSM doesn’t report it, has anything happened?
The question remains: who could have authorized the illegal use of the White House telephone system to provide fraudulent “official” cover for a Clinton fundraiser operating abroad under fraudulent credentials? This is a real thumbsucker. Like so many other Clinton affairs, this is now receding into the mists of history as another unsolvable mystery. Only the cynics ... oh my, we aren’t supposed to go there, or we get labelled hyper-partisan conspiracy theorists, and we will never get invited to the talk shows again.
this could mean two things:
a new death squad has been hired. the suicides used to be two shots to the back of the head.
hillary still wants to be president
Wow. Just wow. Thank you for sharing that.
I just wonder-why now?
I wonder what the family was told to make them fight the investigation so hard?
SOOOOO—How did the table get kicked over???
(SOOOOO—How did the table get kicked over???)
Global Warming 🔥🔥🔥
Duh...
😜
Its a very bad case of suicide.
Is the sheriff driving around in a new pickup?
Love them editors.
59-year-old Middleton, a longtime special adviser for Clinton while he was president, was found hanging from a tree with a shotgun blast to the chest in early May at the Heifer Ranch outside Perryville, Arkansas.
Not only the family were silenced, the coroner and sheriff were as well. Both agreed to list it as a suicide. Now. it’s an active investigation so no one can see the evidence. Very inconvenient.
Vince Foster had no comment.
More than once I thought I must be reading the Babylon Bee.
...while in the trunk
A shotgun blast to the body at close range is very messy, yet bubba says there was no blood when the tree should have been covered with blood and tissue. How do you precariously stand on a table, tie an electrical cord looped over a tree limb to your neck, then manage to reach the shotgun, position it to your chest and somehow pull the trigger all while having a noose around your neck? The mysterious selection of the place for this suicide may have a lot to do with the coroner. In rural counties the county coroner is often an elected position and requires no medical knowledge. I would like to know if the coroner shortly after this “suicide” bought a big motor home, took a lavish vacation or bought a new luxury car.
Worst case of Arkancide they ever saw. Seriously, who in the hell would noose up themselves, stand on a table/chair and the fuss with trying to get a shotgun blast off in his chest? If you believe that, I’ve got a bridge to sell you.
He had his blood drained elsewhere like Vince.
Good thoughtful post.
Great Post!
