I would guess this hinges on the use of the word, Deputized. Sheriffs deputize. The FBI not so much. “Worked an informant” is the proper term.

Exactly. I worked with marshals fbi andcdea years ago... i never heard the term “deputized” outside maybe the context of a joke about an old western.

It’s not a serious term used for informants.
