You simply cannot have mental testing as a prerequisite for having guns. It is simply too subjective, and too easily abused. It's a non-starter.

The US has normalized psychotic thinking. There are people who actually believe that a man can get pregnant and a woman can have a penis, and they aren't considered bizarre or out of the ordinary.

The inarguable proof that politics has infested psychology/psychiatry is to examine the revisions to transgenderism in the DSM-V. They specifically worked with transgender activists to try to create a diagnosis that would walk the tightrope between 1) removing the label of "mental disorder" previously associated with transgenderism, while simultaneously 2) leaving them entitled to claim an entitlement to health care insurance despite not having an illness or disorder. It was "science" that determined the definition. It was health insurance - a political/social consideration.

So why not remove the classification altogether, as was done with homosexuality? Because one of the primary goals of the reclassification is to also improve transgender people’s access to health care. There are often insurance-coverage differences between mental and physical illness, and one of the incentives for the authors of the study would be to close that gap.
