Texas cops reveal there was NO armed guard on campus when gunman walked through unlocked door with his AR-15: First officers on scene retreated when he opened fire on them then waited an HOUR for SWAT

Texas cops have revealed that there was no armed guard on campus when the gunman arrived on Tuesday which allowed him to walk 'unobstructed' through an unlocked door and into the building where he slaughtered 21 people.

At a press conference on Thursday afternoon, Victor Escalon, the Regional Director for the Department of Public Safety South Texas, said Salvador Ramos walked through an unlocked door 'unobstructed' and that there was no guard 'readily available'.

It contradicts earlier reports that he fired at a school resource officer.

Ramos entered the school at 11.40am, 12 minutes after crashing his truck outside the school and walking towards campus with his AR-15. That is when police were alerted to the scene.

At 11.44am, the first cops entered the school. Ramos shot at them and they retreated.

It's unclear if he had already shot the kids and teachers in the fourth grade classroom by then, or if he went on to attack them after those cops retreated.

It then took an hour for specialized SWAT teams to arrive. At 1.06pm, the incident was declared over after Ramos was shot dead.

In the meantime, 150 cops were gathering outside. Some of them were filmed pinning parents to the floor and some were even placed in handcuffs, according to witnesses.

As long as they went home safely, that’s what matters.

Cops these days are just there to write traffic tickets and generate revenue

Very easily? You’re mom is one person. She’d be able to cover over 100,000 schools herself?

This for sure was not planned to garner up more public sympathy for a gun grab.

Every school needs a heavily armed highly trained principle and good surveillance system. And dogs. Lots of dogs. The kids can feed and take care of them.

Teachers and other school staff are there when the action starts, police aren’t.

I am sure there are many other teachers who feel the same. Get lost, troll.

“That’s BS. I’m in a small town in Missouri and every damn sheriff’s deputy and local cop is wearing body armor 24/7. I can guarantee that there were at least 50 standing around with plates.

I run a new car dealership, and they’re wearing plates while in the waiting room getting their oil changed.”

Sure sounds strange. I was a reserve cop for two different departments in the 80s and got issued body armor at both. One was a relatively small department.

“Police had guns but were waiting for body armor.”

I can’t find it now, but there was a really good interview/write up about the response to the Roseburg, Oregon community college shooting that happened in 2015.

Two detectives (Detective Sergeant Kaney and Detective Spingath) were nearby and responded to the call. They could hear the shooting as they drove up and they pulled up close to the building they thought the shots were coming from.

IIRC, seeing as they weren’t SWAT they were just supposed to secure the area. But as they were driving in they saw they were the first ones there and they both agreed that they weren’t going to just wait.

IIRC they were supposed to wait in a safe area, get their vests and long rifles (out of the trunk?), etc.

Anyway, they drove right up and the gunman saw them and he fired at the detectives. The detectives returned fire and this went back and forth a couple of times. The detectives hit the gunman injuring him. The gunman sat down and shot himself in the head. 8 minutes from the time of the first 911 call. (Sadly - he had already killed 10 of the students, 18-20 years old range).

Iraq war veteran Chris Mintz was a student (older) and a hero. He blocked the doorway into one of the classrooms filled with students. Chris told the gunman he wasn’t getting in the room. The gunman shot him 7 times point blank. Chris lived and I believe is fully recovered but with rods in his arms/legs. Nobody else was shot after Chris stopped him.

It was just after Chris was shot that the detectives had the shoot-out with the gunman and ended it.

Maybe we can train police officers to be teachers instead.

I don’t understand how one can think that the trained, armed police all too often can’t handle these situations, but an elementary school teacher can.

OK, I’ll try.

If the shooter was outside and trained, armed police are inside, then they should be able to take care of him. But if the shooter is already inside the school and the cops are having to attack him, the cops are at a disadvantage.

An armed teacher inside a locked room should only engage him if the murderer is trying to get into the room. Taking fire while trying to get through a door, might discourage him. I wouldn’t expect armed teachers from trying to hunt the intruder down, that would be the cops’ jobs.

I agree but I just don’t think they will let these teachers carry on there bodies. Maybe in elementary school.

Maybe police departments can have a satellite office in every school building.

Simpler solution would be to have a Dunkin' Donut shop in every school.

K. That would only work if EVERY teacher is armed. One or two armed teachers down on the other side of the building would do nothing. So a few million armed teachers will solve this problem? Parent teacher conferences are going to be fun.
