I was in a meeting with our county sheriff after the Parkland massacre and some gentleman there had a suggestion, I thought made a lot of sense.
While this was meant for a pretty rural county, I think it could work anywhere.
Anyway, his idea was, put at desk & computer terminal in every school for deputies to use for doing reports. Go to a school. Park out front . This would be a visible presence. Go inside and do any paperwork needed. Then back on patrol or end of shift.
A random LEO in a random school at random times doing the part of the job that takes cops off the street, usually in a station could be used even more efficiently with very little cost to city, county or state.
While the suggestion went nowhere in 2012, I still think it is one worthy of delving into.
That and a Dunkin Donuts outlet and we're on to something.
