SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle City Council has approved an ordinance freeing up more than $1 million to be used to recruit police officers to a department that has lost hundreds of staffers in the last two years.
About 20 residents called into the meeting in opposition to the plan, saying the council is figuring out how to incentivize hiring more police without having done anything in the last two years to hold police more accountable after the police killing of George Floyd, a Black man in Minneapolis.
Councilmember Tammy Morales argued there were better ways to spend money to increase public safety, like investing in safe drug consumption sites, tiny house villages, permanent supportive housing units, back rent payments for struggling tenants, or other social programs.

None of these giveaways would help the crime/violence problems. I think it's been proven that most of the people causing the problems don't want any of these.

If I were a cop, there would be no way I would work for this city.
Having worked in Seattle for over twenty years and being a graduate of a private Seattle university, I can say this,
even 20 years ago they had one of the worst police departments in the country.
I did not live in Seattle(never that stupid).
They should disband the department and contract with King county Sheriff for police services.
King county Sheriff is ELECTED. And most all areas around Seattle are much more normal middle of the road voters.
I use the term “middle of the road” loosely.
Even Hawaii as screwed up as it is, is better than those nutcases.
