Mutual defense works both ways. It is not about “U.S.” interests but agreed on MUTUAL interests.
So they could hide in their bases in Iraq or bomb Serbia into loosing a quarter of their territory? The only thing "mutual" about NATO is that everyone knows that the US has always done all the heavy lifting.
As much as Ronald Reagan, GHWBush, GWBush and Tremp all wanted NATO countries to pay up to agreed % of GDP to their military, none were isolationists.
We actually had an enemy in Europe back then. Our only rival today is on the other side of the world.
Beginning today 19 nations of NATO - Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, the U.K. and the U.S. - begin a joint exercise to beef up coordination of communications and operations across participating land, sea and air units, to improve NATO multinational command operations in a project planned in the Trump DOD in 2020. It is what a MUTUAL defensive pact is all about.
You really seem sincere in your ignorance. NATO is nothing but a bunch of brass in a $2 billion dollar building in Belgium. We have wasted trillions on Europe in the last 73 years. Imagine what the quality of life in the US would be like if the Europeans had paid for their own defense.
