Yanukovych was removed from office by his own parliament, no different than a US president being removed by impeachment. The Ukrainian leaders since then have been elected by the people of Ukraine.

Yanukovych's allies and fellow Russian collaborators started the separatist movement in the Donbass with Russian money and weapons.
